I know that I am opening up a can of worms and people will have there opinions on this one. A little bit about this, I have a 56' that I am going to use the old engine that I have went through for a while, till the funds allow me to have a new engine to build, "approx three years". I have everything setup for 12 volts, " lights, air pump, etc.", and here is the thing, I want to see if anyone has used the old 6volt genny with a 12 volt regulator. I have searched around and have not found much on this.
I have searched on different forums for ford and chevy guys doing this and they do it all the time. Is our vw gennys stout enough to last about three years of added heat it will be making at 14.4 volts?
I know that I could go out and get a 300-400 12v porsche, but I really do not want to tie up 400 dollars when I could use that on something else for the project.
Any info would be great.
Thanks |

A 6 volt generator puts out 9 volts unregulated. You will never get enough voltage out to charge a 12 volt battery. A 12 volt generator puts out 14 volts unregulated. _________________ Chris

unregulated they put out 9 volts? why even have a regulator on them then? I was thinking its in the 20 volt range for unregulated voltage. It depends on rpm but man 9 volts? |

If it works I suspect it wouldn't start charging until somewhere around 2500-3000 rpm. The 12 volt generator will allow about 5 more amps of current than the 6 volt regulator, so the generator may overheat and fail. _________________

I would not be doing much night driving. The only current needed from the battery would be for starts, and running the engine. There would not be much current that it would need to supply. |
