I have the original engine in my 69 and was contemplating building another and running it while I freshen up the original... but mostly looking for a little more power, I was thinking a 1641 would suffice...

I found this engine and noticed it had an H and while my engine has an H didn't type 2 1500's have an H ??

if I offered this guy 150 for this motor is it a good buy or suitable case for a 1641 build??

Hi. The H5 series of cases were used in 1968 and 1969. This was the beginning of the emissions struggles with VW. I used to be a dealer/independent mechanic beginning in 1973. Even during the 1980's it was very difficult to have one of these cases check out ok for a stock rebuild. The two big problems found were cracks and a spread center main web. I had better luck with the F case used in 1966 and the first H case used in 1967.
Let me know what you might bee looking for on here or via a PM, as I still have some contacts with old school shops.
Hope this helps, Bill.

Not a whole lot of difference going to 1641 so is it worth the time, $ or trouble?
Its a crap shoot when buying a used vw engine, The ad doesnt give me confidence the seller knows condition.
That case may not even be rebuild-able, and the only way to know is to disassemble and have it checked at a vw machine shop. It may give you core rods/crank... As Bill says that isnt a great case to build. IF it turns out to be a buildable case, $150 is good. Personally I prefer later, dual relief cases. If you want power you can feel with out stroking, a 1776 is more bang for the buck.
Here is some good reading...
