Electric heater?

Anybody try this?

Winter has returned to Indiana, trying to sty warm in the daily driver.

You'll need a really long extension cord if you plan on leaving the driveway.

I was looking at my fresh air box a while ago, (testing the motor on the bench), and I found out that if you block off the cold air vent that goes to the hood, the box doesn't blow any air at all. And if it is hooked up as the factory intended, the box takes in cold air and mixes it with warm air from the tubes that are connected with the heater channels.

Now, here's what I was thinking....

1.) Cut small 1" holes in the sides of the box below and a little forward of the air exit pipes that go to the dash.
2.) Mount a plastic "flange" of some sort to these holes that would connect to the heater channel tubes.
3.) Block off the hood flange intake and the small holes in the dash vents where the small heater channel tubes normally connect.

Instead of taking in cold air from the base of the windshield, you would be taking in warm air ONLY from the heater channel tubes.

Opinions?

Dan

No heater boxes
J tubes (blame the po)

I do have one of those electric heaters that plug into a cigarette lighter.

Just was curious that's all, and, to add null to injury, pretty sure the left fresh air knob isn't operating as the factory intended. Not sure which way they are supposed to go anyway.

I know, I know, I should have used the warm air to prepare for winter, but I just was too busy with other things.

I have electric heaters in my electric Bug, 1,000 watts will hardly take the chill off inside after 15 min of operation. You would need 84 Amps at 12 V to match my system.

If you want a real heater, use the engine oil.

Source some original German made heater boxes from the SW USA that will not be rusted out. Install the thermostat and flaps if missing on the engine. If your heater channels are rust and hole free and your hoses inside the A pillar are intact and connected, you'll have no issues with plenty of hot heat.

My 67 bug is original and bones stock. Last winter, I drove it in 30 degree weather. Within 5 minutes of driving down the road, I had to almost shut the heater off. It about roasted me out of the car. Wink

Put your money and time into restoring the stock system, simplest and cheapest way to get heat that really works.

The electric setup is a nonstarter, the math just doesn't work.

In my 1974 SB, I divert almost all my heat to the front windows, so they keep clear. I have side-window vents open, too. The rear floor vents are closed off at all times, the front floor vents are opened slightly. I get plenty of heat. Of course, I have OG heat exchangers, good heater channels, a working engine thermostat system, etc.

The funny thing is, I don't have to get up early in the morning when it's cold, and drive to work; and here in California, we only have a few weeks of really cold mid-day temps. But it's nice to have plenty of heat in case I need it, I guess.

A cheaper easier option is to buy a really nice jacket and pair of gloves - no mods required.

And a credit card works pretty good for scraping the frost off the inside of the windshield. Laughing
