Thinking of getting 11.5 foot kayak for fishing and wondering if removing passenger seat or turning it sideways will allow int to fit in my westy? rough measurements makes me think it will but would like to know if anyone does this and how it works for them. Really don.t want a trailer or to put on the top.Thanks. Question

Yes, it will fit. We have a pair of 10 foot kayaks and they fit with a lot of room to spare. In fact, they fit inside my Mitsubishi van with their noses between the front seats about even with the shifter. I think the Vanagon is 20 inches longer or more.

my 13 foot, 4 inch kayak fits inside my standard va (non camper) middle seat removed, rear seat folded flat. have it at a diagonal, goes between front seats (hooked a strap between the front seat attched by the head resr supports for boat to rest on so it dont rest on the dash) it is about 6 inches short of touching the windshield.

besure to dry the boat before putting it in the van to avoid build up of water on the floor under the matts, and rinse if you use it in salf water.

keep yakking!!!

Yep, I put the front passenger seat sideways and easily carry 12 foot lumber on the bed to the seat.

fun to watch the 'pick up' guys when you're loading more lumber into your van than they can carry.

better still to watch someone else have to reach up high to load their kayak on a roof, spend time tieing it down, etc... for me, pop it inside and go. how sweet is that?????

Mine is long enough that it only fits if its nose is up within 2 inches of the windshield glass. I do put a towel under its nose so the dash is not stressed and in front, protecting the glass, but it's also important to tie or bungee it back so a sudden stop won't crack the windshield. That happened to me with a windsurf board once, and a friend recently admitted to a similar hassle w/a kayak. On the other hand, if you have a badly scratched windshield, live for the thrill.

rather than a towel under the nose of the yak to protect the dash, see if you can put a sling between the two front seats, I use a carabiner to clip the sling made of nylon webbing between the two inner headrest supports, this effectily keeps the yak bow off the dash.

keep on yaking!

This discussion reminded me immediately of the following picture (taken from the book "Kayaks to Hell" by the amazing William Nealy):

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

And unfortunately, I've seen it happening live: a friend of mine used to carry her whitewater kayak (a Jackson 4Fun) inside her TJ Jeep, and one day she pushed too hard, the kayak was dry and slid over the seats till if hit the windshield (kayak 1, Jeep 0).

I've carried my whitewater kayaks inside the van many times with no problems - just make sure they're always anchored somehow (tightly tied with ropes to a handle or something).

In the days when we all made our own kayaks, they were all a standard length of over 13 feet. I remember my friends Bay with the broken winshield.

Anyone else remember Lettman Mk 4, NPK or SRB boats? Remember getting air, pop ups, pirouettes, breaking the nose on your boat trying to get enders, or
going through a big role of duct tape every boating season? Remember nobody on the rivers, and having to send back river permits you couldn't use because you didn't have that much time off?

Thanks for the trip down memory lane. Kayaking is the reason I bought my vanagon back in '86. 'Got tired of arriving at the put in and sleeping on the ground (ever sleep next to the railroad tracks at Westwater?).

BTW I had a William Nealy "KAYAKS TO HELL" T-shirt.

I still run my Lettman yak, it is about 40 years old. still a very good boat, it is fast,
i surf it on ocean swells, run it on bay sloughs and white water at a dam. been on it every day this week, im an yakaddict.

mine is like this one, except it is white.... https://www.google.com/search?q=lettmann+kayak+vin...XCzacuM%3A

I used to fit a yak on the roof of a 914, the yak was nearly as long as the car. but the roof was so low did not need a ladder to attach the boat to tne roof.

I can easily fit theses two kayaks in the Westy. On the roof is preferred but it is nice to have the option, sometimes you just need to run the boats and people upstream.

Watch out for any salt water left on the hull.
Surfer dudes owned my 84 before me and the rear hatch lock half mounted by the engine cover is permanently mounted because of the rust from seawater dripping off the boards. Where could any salt water go? Maybe into the seat belt connections from the angle of the hull Question
