Hello:
I have an '84 4-speed and am asking for advice.
1). Dino vs. Synthetic, and why?
2). Brands you've used?
3). Favorite?
4). Brands that failed you?
5). Miles between changes?
No bickering, please.
Thanks!

I've switched to synthetics ever since I first tried them. Easier shifting at all times but very much so when cold. It also helps take away any roughness you have any going into a gear. I used Redline MT90 for 10 years until people here started ragging on it. I never had any issues but decided to try a some other brands anyway. Lots of shops still recommend it. Anyway, I tried Amsoil and hated it. But I also tried Mobil Delvac 75W90 Synthetic and like how it feels. It has good reviews and has been recommended by some VW experts which is how I heard about it. |

Thanks, Dave!
I run Mobil 1 in the bus -- knowing some rave, and some sneer -- so was wondering about their gear lube as well. I was also like Amsoil dealer 20-something way back when, but won't try it. I believe the lube in there *might* be Redline, as the mechanic was a longtime race wrench, but need to see if it's listed on the receipt from 36K ago.
Yep, on this I should have done a search, but have a devious ulterior motive coming in a dedicated thread -- so really wanted this focused on what I asked for now. I also always read what's in the archives, and noted negative comments about Redline and wondered... is it possible it breaks down old, nasty existing lube and re-circulates a tainted mix in the trans?
So hope no irritants have been administered, search or not we always have new posters, products, etc., so I like fresh thoughts as well.
Thanks to all. |

I've run amsoil GL-4 in my 260ft lb TDI for 6 years and 105k miles without issue now. I'm not some crazy amsoil person. My father used to sell amsoil and I got a deal on it. I run Kendall dino in my stock syncro and it has been fine. It's changed every 40k in each rig regardless. |
