My friend's wife has a 2006 Beetle convertible but she is thinking of getting a new Beetle and I have first crack at buying the 2006. It's in great condition, always garage kept, has 72,000 miles on it and is an automatic. He says the only problem that he knows of is the top won't move. It happened before and he said the switch to move the top was dirty and then it worked fine for a long time, but now it doesn't work again. Is the convertible top switch a common problem, if that is the problem? What other issues should I be concerned about with this car? I am not at all familiar with the Generation 2 Beetle. |

Leave it up. That top is on the end of its life span & will quickly start coming apart if raised & lowered. The back window is bonded to the top fabric & is due to separate in the near future (which requires replacement of the outer cover).
Rear window regulators are aconstant source of issues.
Automatic transmissions are crap & had a recall (sorry, "campaign") on the valve body.
Mileage is low but the timing belt is due on age alone. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

The local prices for a car of this year and condition are in the $5500 range. I would be getting it for much cheaper then that. Still worth the risk?
As far as the tranny, are they the weak link in the chain? At what mileage doing they generally surrender? |

Yes, the automatic transmission has always been VWs Achilles heel. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Is there a common issue with the automatics, or do variable things in the tranny break down? |

There was a campaign (read silent recall) for the valve bodies starting in '06. If customers had shifting issues, the valve bodies were replaced under warranty. Lots of other issues with the transmissions from torque converters to final drive to electronics _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

Is there a general mileage where tranny problems start to show up?
Also curious what percentage of cars were having problems. |

you can call the dealer with the VIN and see if it has been covered or if it is still open for that car. |

However, the campaigns weren't open ended like a recall. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

There was never a campaign on the valve bodies, but certain models and years got an extended warranty on them. If the car had a hard shift up or down, usually 1-2, or 2-3, and there were no faults stored, we'd replace the valve body. This was mainly on the 5th gen cars. A messy job, but always fixed them. _________________ I will never lie, but sometimes the truth changes.
