2002 Jetta, bought the car last year with four new tires on it. I didn't examine every inch of them but they looked brand new. So far have put 13,000 miles on the car.

When I last checked the pressures, I noticed huge wear on both the inner and outer edges of the front left tire, almost no tread on the edge. While the tread depth is excellent in the middle of that tire, and everywhere on the other three.

I know wear on the edges indicates low pressure, but I have checked several times since buying the car and they have never been low. Been going by the fuel door which says 29psi.

I am wondering what could cause this? I haven't had it aligned but it runs straight as an arrow and has no history of being wrecked. Is there anything else that could cause this wear pattern? Besides rotating them again, should I somewhat over-inflate that tire to even out the wear?

How many miles are on it?

I would look at tie rod wear or more likely the rear bushings on the front lower control arms. When the bushings go bad, the control arms are allowed to move back & forth during acceleration & braking, this affects toe in/out.

If you do need these bushings, replace them with the Audi TT bushings (good ones, not the Chinese ones).

Thanks, I'll take a look at those areas. It's at 143,000 miles now.

Finally got a chance to look at the suspension. I don't see anything loose or wrong, but just a little play in the steering that looks like its in the rack, not the tie-rod ends or anything.

Looked at the tires more closely the front left is actually worn uniformly more than the others, so I guess it is just older.

I will still get it aligned to make sure.
