Been a while since I posted, days has been busy. I have recently bought an EJ22 Subaru engine complete with adapter for mating it to VW aircooled transmission, and I plan to install it in my 412.
Where would you route the the tubes for the front mounted radiator? Any thoughts on the radiatormount? |

I can't answer your question, but I'm looking forward to the answer, and following this project. Hope you plan to keep us posted. Bob |

Thats a tough question. Its two questions really. Where to run the hoses and where to put the radiator.
Ok.....before we even get to where to run the hoses. A more complex way to mount the radiator.....but slick....and expensive.....is to get two small radiators and place them in the recess...which is maybe 12"-14" wide and 20" long.....on each side of the spare tire well behind the loser valance......and connect them in series.
When I was still planning on installing air conditioning.....that is where I was planning on putting a condensor on each side.
There is enough vertical space to place each radiator titlted forward with a thin inlet scoop on the leading edge by the lower valance. Each would have a fan attached to the lower side.
Whether you can get radiators this size....I don't know.
The other place....but I dont think it will be big enough.....is under the spare tire similar to how some of the cars had thei AC condensor installed.....and likely you will have to remove the whole bottom of the spare tire well.
There are other places.....like basically under the transmission......but ground clearance is very low....and you have to have room for the fan. Or possibly....in the sedans.....where the gas heater is. And in that case you will need to rig up a heat exchanger.
The hoses......hmmmm....not many options if they run to the front of the car. The bottom is really too flat.
If you run a solid tube up and back....you can "squash" the tubes to an oval about 1" thick and run them up each side of the center tunnel on the outside.....or run them down the inside next to the step where the heater channel is just inboard of each door....which will block the footwell vents.
Or run the sam squashed ovals both down the passenger side on the centerline next to the tunnel.

I've been rethinking and researched a bit more, and it looks like the Subara EJ22 engine is a lot lighter than the type 4 engine. Type weighs in at 141kg and the EJ22 120kg.
There is some type 2 guys who has mounted the radiator under the car and some has mounted it in the side of the engine compartment. In my 412 coupe I could use one cooler on each side measuring 30x40 cm. It would need some fresh air, so I will use the louvers from a type 4 Squireback in my rear fenders.
What do you think of this idea? |

Hmmm............oooooooh.......you know ....since you are willing to fabricate....you could on the coupe......mount a single radiator of good size .... flat against the sloping wall or space behind the back seat. It can be sheet metal covered with a fan.
Then seal it in with a flat lid behind the seat. Some ducting to pull air in from below or the sides. Hmmmmmall of the ideas could work. Ray |
