Greetings all,

After years of gleaning knowledge in The Samba in the type 4 forums, (thanks Ray, Tram, everyone) I have finally acquired a 1965 notchback, and now will be spending my time between the forums.
This is a solid runner, but I'm not one to leave well enough alone, so we have a complete frame off planned for this.

Looking forward to learning much from you all!

Many thanks! Thought parts were tough to find for the 412 variant, finding that some of the desirable pieces for this is just as hard. Got lucky though, got a literal truck load of extra parts with the car, including a second engine. After I get it all sorted out, might be up to trade goodies for goodies.

Great car! Very Happy

I agree that it is screaming for total CORRECT restoration... I've never been a fan of "patina" which is way less correct than a proper restore in my opinion and not "original" at all since these cars never originally came with patina.

That's my opinion, and anyone who doesn't like it can lump it, LOL.

This is also my opinion: The hell with Ray and Tram except as a backup on this- you need to go to the 1500 Club thread and pick their brains- engage there. Good group of people and they are anal on what's correct. In that respect, multiple heads that know what they're doing are way better than one or two. You'll get that with Jason, Pedro, Jack, Lee, and all the other serious early car geeks.

Right off the bat, the four lug wheels and brakes have gotta go! Laughing

Next project is sorting through and categorizing all the spare parts. A mixture of type 3 and type 4 stuff. Then drop the 412s motor for a rebuild. (Happy wife, happy life) and then start blowing this apart. Now who can point me to a clean set of towel bars?

Well it can't be "original" and "new", nor can it be preserved and restored. You gotta pick. It's either original and preserved, or it's new and restored.

I am hoping someone can verify what I think I'm seeing with my car.

The Pan and the VIN both match 315 169 734. Great news. The engine is stamped with 0947505 with an R stamped underneath.

Is this the correct engine for the car? It looks to me to be, but before I start thinking I actually have a numbers matching car, I'd like it confirmed by someone here.

The car was converted to 12v right before I got it, but I have all the 6V parts. Trying to find out which direction I want to go with the resto.

No one here can tell you. You have to send the chassis number and engine number off to VW and they can verify if the engine number matches the engine that was installed in the car at the factory.

I have ordered the certificate and data sheet, and in half a year I will know, I was just hoping someone might be able to tell me if the engine might be correct for the vin. Havent found any info about the "R"stamped under the engine number.

You can look in the VIN/Chassis Numbers chart in the Technical section up at the top of the page.

It won't tell you if the engine is original to the car but you can see if the production of the engine roughly aligns with the production of the vehicle to see if it might possibly be original. Obviously if the engine production date is after the vehicle production date, then that's not gonna be original Smile

I don't know about the R either but having anything besides the number stamped there is a bad sign for originality. Perhaps the R indicates a remanufactured engine.

Thank you for your input sjbartnik, but upon further digging, the "R"actually lends quite a bit of credence to the idea that this is numbers matching.

Aaron M265 wrote an article that states that for a short period in '65 they used the "R" to differentiate between the standard compression and the lower compression engines marked with an "N"

http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=389547

That and the numbers fall right in the sweet spot of a late March 1965 build.

I'm holding off all work on the notch until I get the pedigree. If it is all numbers matching, then I feel I am obligated to do as accurate a resto to original as possible.
