I was pulling my hair out trying to figure out my over rich running situation .... finally I realized the afm flap is sticking. I cleaned it out with electroncs cleaner and put Teflon lub on the surface since it would actually squeek, but is there a good way to take the flap assembly apart and clean and lube it with Teflon lube or the like so it does not stick again. The trouble shooting guides really seem to be more and more less relevant as these things age since the things that are supposed to not be an issue should now also be suspect. I know on my Vanagon I have had to replace the ECU and idle stabilizer etc... parts that used to be considered bullet proof. At this point everything should be suspect. _________________ 1982 Westy, 1974 412 Variant... Yes, Aircooled's are great! Oh and I do have modern computer controlled vehicles too, but I just don't care about them. |

This can be quite a problem. While it "can" be rough plastic surfaces dragging on the edge of the flap....the fact that the edges are dragging more than they should be is usually the actual issue. It may be a worn out pivot point letting the flap cock slightly. That could be fixed with a couple of smalll rulon or PEEK bearings if need be.
I have not had an AFM in my hands in so long....I cannot remember the ways to take it apart.....but with some careful work you should be able to do it. Ray |
