I was reading what turned out to be a old thread, and I saw a post I have some questions on about using 1.4 to 1 rockers with a stock cam:

I built a 88x69 with a "stock" short block (other than c/w crank, light flywheel with an aluminium pressure plate), I didn't even bore the case. Along with ported heads, 1.4 rockers (stock cam), 8.6:1, dual Solex 40PII, etc. It was an awesome little engine. Revved quick, idled smooth, pulled to 5,500 and got awesome mileage. It was an expensive engine for only 75-80hp though Smile

My question is 1.4 to 1 rockers on a stock cam.
Is that high a ratio going to kill the case & cam?
Is the dynamic compression ratio going to be higher than 8.6 to 1 because of the design of stock cam?

No, it will definitely not. The total lift is under .400". Use just a single high rev spring. If you want a harder camshaft, use Engle's new stock cam.

The max normal compression on a stock cam with dual 2-barrel carbs should be no more than about 8.3:1 on 91 octane. Add 1.4 rockers, and the duration at .050" increases a bit. It should allow for 8.6:1 on 91 octane.

If you are concerned, use the 1.25 rockers. Contrary to some comments, I have found a substantial performance improvement when used in conjunction with improved carburation and exhaust. Has been part of my standard mild 1600 upgrade for several years.

Just remember to correct the CR as it will result in some bleed off of dcr. 8,3 is good for medium fuel.

My Dad has been using this setup in his Baja for about 8 years. Its a very smooth engine and gets great mileage. No problems with cam wear as long as you don't go crazy with spring tension. He is running a static CR of 8:1.
