New Beetle Convertible Questions.

My wife is thinking we need a New Beetle convertible. After looking (for the first time) on Craigslist and Ebay I am amazed how cheap they are. After reading a little here on the forum, I think I now know why. However, if we were going to take the plunge, is there a best year, where the kinks are out of them? Do they all have a timing belt to replace, or was that design changed later? Any real experiences, good and bad, would be appreciated!!

Pretty sure all had timing belts unless it is a 2.5L or the DI 2.0T. Dunno if there is what I would call a "best year" of the NB's. Might as well get a Golf, same thing with more room behind the rear seat.
