|

I need tires on the back of my trike that are close to 30" tall. I think I have decided on firestone 650/16. maybe 670/16 I can`t remember. anyway, I am having no luck trying to pick a wheel. they should be only about 6" wide cause these firestones are narrow. I would prefer steel wheels. they are going on a swingaxle rear end so I guess for steel wheels (vs alum. custom) I am talking adaptors too. I think j-bugs has aluminum custom wide-5 16`s for 150. each, which I might end up doing.
another question, will I be happy with drum brakes on the back or should I go to discs first? It has a 82 Goldwing front end. the motor is standard 1600. thanks. |

steve,
am looking forward to it, should be a BIG improvement to the way it looks and the narrower tires should help gas mileage a little. what did you do for paint? I am thinking about powdercoat, and wondering if I should have him do the inside of the wheel too. I think that would be a good thing, how bout you? |

I had my local powdercoating place do them for me--all sides, including bead seats. I think the color was something like "arctic silver," and with a clearcoat on top. I don't paint anymore--powdercoating is the way to go for me, and it's more durable than paint. _________________ Stock Steve

ok, thanks. I built a car-trike in 2010-11 and had the frame powdercoated and figured that was WAY ahead of paint. seems a little thicker than paint that`s why I was concerned about the bead. this one is a tube frame also except having the veedub motor in the back will make it MUCH more comfortable in the summer. I did this frame with spray bedliner. works very nice and is tougher than paint I think, easier for sure. thanks. |

stock steve,
I ordered 16" wheels today through a local parts store from Dorman. they are 6 1/2" wide and have a 4 1/2" bolt pattern. vw wide 5 adaptors I will get from appletree automotive nearby. the wheels are new and painted black, and they are steel, $45. ea. and the adaptors are $40. a pair. The tires will come from lucas and are 650/16 and a hair over 30" tall. about $200. each. terrible price to pay for a tire but gotta do it. samk. |
