OK, NO laughing. My Mom didn't have any girls, just my brother and I. We both were taught to cook, clean and sew... Many years later I asked Mom about that and she responded that she was sure if she had not taught us, we would end up hungry, dirty and naked. true story.

I have been sewing since 13. I have done car seats, boat seats, car covers tent repair etc. (I have never sew a "outfit"). This skill has saved me hundreds over the years.

All that being said. You will need a pretty good machine to sew auto interiors. I have a 1956 anker that will sew through your hand (dont ask). If I can fit it under the foot, that machine will sew it. I paid less than 20 bucks for it. search Craigslist for older, cast iron, zigzag machines with the exposed motor on the back.

The best advise I can give you is to look for an upholstery supply house in or near your town. They have the materials and supplies, as well as knowledge, that you need. For example in PHX, tempe sales is the place to go. Its been open for as long as I can remember. Great folks, great prices and great advise. Be sure you get thread that will stand the sun!

After that its just practice. Go slow, use lots of pins (or tape or staples ) and use common sense. Remember its ok to rip out a seam and re-do it, if the fit is not good. Good luck and have fun.

I don't know what it would cost these days, but I had my two VWs reupholstered in 1976 and 1979, was under $130 back then.

$600 if you only account for inflation.

Thanks. That means that the $130 Maaco paint job I got for my Convertible in Feb. 1978 would also be $600 !!!
