I just got back from Carmel-By-The-Sea, California and found this little beauty down the street from my family's home. It was Monterey Car Week but I spent most of the time with my family and loved every minute. Though this beauty is not original she was clean and has a good straight body. I thought it was a 58 but I apologize for not taking more photos or doing my research. Anyone know the year and can you share the identifiers to determine between 56-59 on this bus?

BTW I am never happier or healthier than in my native California, someday I hope to move back.

I don't see an indent on the rear hatch so you may be right or close about it being a '58. However I would think it should have pressed bumpers and/or 3rd brake light to be correct for 58. The tail lights look excessively high, like way way too high up for an even earlier bus. Other than that, I've got nothing else to add.

Wrong decklid for a '58. Could be a '59/'60. Of course that is assuming it has all the original parts.
And you are correct about those tail lights. Those are bordering on dopey, not dope.

May thru July '58 had the eyebrow decklid, so could be a '58 with wrong bumpers and way-wrong taillight placement.

Yep that me, what a ham LOL. When I see a bus I look at the body only most especially when there are so many nonstock parts on it like this one. Wish I had taken more photos to help with identifying it. The tail light placement was the most obvious to me too regarding the body.

Aside from the non stock parts, non stock colours, non stock or chromed bumpers and those <!> tail lights hard to really tell what year bus it is.

Imagine the tail lights were moved up higher on the bus as a concession to modern day distracted drivers types but man oh man they look out of place! Might as well have switched to bay window tail lights at that rate.

Have been to Carmel as well - cool place albeit $$$$

For real! I was expecting to hear it was from out west. Here's a few up skirt pics.

Spotted: This oddly customized panel van.

We were down in Monterey, CA for part of the Christmas weekend (2016) and drove by this auto-sale shop.

Dodi Auto Sales
2240 Del Monte Ave, Monterey, CA 93940

Had to stop the second I saw from the street the alteration to the front turn-signals on this split bus.

Zoom in on the dog-leg to see the Chevy Flag Emblem that was placed there:

There were other air-cooled vehicles there, but to keep this split-bus relevant, I'll merely link those photos:

Super Beetle Convertables:

Porsche:

Year of this bus?
...also, note the customized back-side window.
This had to been a known bus in the community prior to it ending up here.

Although I prefer stock, I understand folks will do what they'd like with their buses.
This one, however, I feel could be brought back to its original state... with enough time, care and money.

The front signals definitely need fixing. The rest? I think I'd go with it! Especially that knarly rear bumper and hitch. That screams 'murica.

Not only is that a gnarly bumper/hitch, it is ALSO the mounts for a pair of leaf springs! I'll bet that poor thing also has a V-8 amidships and a suitable rear axle befitting the six lug wheels.

I googled the number on the windshield and came up with this:

https://www.easyexport.us/vehicle-finder/lot-23556...a-san-jose

They're calling it a 1959, but the VIN (326971) listed on the auction page would put it at February 1958. The auction photo shows the forward cargo door having a handle recess which started at VIN 375089 (August 1958).

Went to check the surf at Sunset Cliffs in Ocean Beach, California this morning. This bus appears to be the mascot of a new coffee shop on the corner of Point Loma Avenue and Sunset Cliffs Blvd called "Surf Check" of all things.
Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

The bus appears to be a '66 or '67 standard. I'm assuming the bus is related to the coffee shop a couple yards off the side doors as the coffee shop has the same color scheme on its vintage '60s trailer. I didn't shoot the trailer but you can look down on it. https://www.google.com/maps/place/Sunset+Cliffs,+S...17.2514447

I thought I'd seen it here and there but there are a lot of random busses in Dago these days, sheesh. So is it part of the coffee shop or was he just there color matching with the trailer?
