You've been threatening(sp?) to do this for years. That sounds like your calling... find an early body Notch (1 that doesn't need a ton of rust removal), and cut the roof off it, and build the convertible you've always lusted after. I started doing that, but I really need an early nose clip to weld on, and I've had a T-34 dropped in my lap, so it's on hold. Plus, mine stated out as a Squareback.
But I do understand buying a place and putting down roots. Hell, I did that almost 30 years ago where I'm at now, which is how I can afford my T-3 addiction. Buy cheap, and STOP moving, and you'll have the extra money to play with. |
You should have bought the pink '63 "Convertible" Notch.
Fairly clean car and at least it was already hacked... |
So what actually happened with that 63 pink vert thingy? We were looking at an ebay ad wernt we> I assume it sold? Sold local so Ev will see it in the Phoenix area? Sold somewhere else?
Ive just been giving more thought to a viable canidate to hack
Maybe Ill buy back my 62 low vin from Bob, shit thats a turn key hack And the roof has a dent _________________ Jason "notchboy" Weigel

I had it brewing waaay back in my head when it came up, but the timing was wrong. It wasnt till Ev pointed it out that it sank in. I bet the owner wasnt seeing high enough numbers to sell it. So I bet it wont be a viable option.
Im thinking a chassy in the $1000-$2000 range. Solid body, correct pan would be nice, decent fenders. The rest will be sourced through my Don Notchboy "favors" The dash pad is the only thing Im not a 100% on getting, but I know a guy with several
I looked through bug vert part out cars today Tram. The pickings will be reeeaaal good when and if we get to that point. _________________ Jason "notchboy" Weigel

Aaaah, yes. Wrap- around dash.
Having recently received Retrovan's repop dash cap, I noticed that it's a fine rigid piece of plastic... which means that it'd be a cinch to glue some wood veneer to, and make it stay.
Most of you know that I do a lot of Mercedes restoration, too... which means I have to do some re- veneering from time to time. Veneering is sort of easy when you're gluing it to wood, especially with the veneer softeners available on the market today. However, gluing it to metal or hard plastic has been an issue due to bonding characteristics of veneer glue. But, now there's a new product on the market that, so far, seems promising indeed.
I've always envisioned a "higher trim level" for a Cabriolet, and my wrap around dash would look just like this:
It would never work on the regular dash pad because it's too flexible, and the glue would just pull the upper layer off the pad eventually. You could carve a wooden one, but talk about labor intensive But Retro's dash cap actually solves this- it's a SOLID meaty hunk of ABS. Making pieces of wood to replicate the rest of the wraparound bits wouldn't be an issue- OR you could use the OEM hard plastic ones.
Ten or twelve coats of automotive clear lacquer later, and...
Might not be for everyone, but I like it. I'd fab up the inner windshield frame, too. _________________ Give A Pal a Hand!

Before you send off to Bob-Tram, do you have pics of this repop dash the guy made? If its an accurate pebble grain dash then its gold to me. But if its leather grained....... _________________ Jason "notchboy" Weigel

I'm pretty sure I bought the radio from that pink vert notch. I found it on ebay a couple weeks after the car disappeared. The bracket is the same color pink as the car. _________________ '68 Sunroof Squareback

The seller's id is partsoreum. The pink vert was re-listed on ebay for $2000 not long after the original posting on ebay. _________________ '68 Sunroof Squareback

I could just see that parked at Tram's for the next 6 months to a year. |
