Agreed. If not, don't get it wet, and you're going to need to build a garage for it. Personally, if I'm fixing part of it, I'll fix ALL of it.
I realise there are people out there who say leave it like it is, but then you look at the nice looking cars they drive too. |
As i stated in an earlier post if i have to do the pan half the body has to come off. If i go that far it makes sense to do the whole car. I see the sharks came out already. I've owned busses for 26 years. This is my first Type 3 and need to learn way more than i already know about these cars. Hopefully i can get some advice when needed. |

Ive always hoped this to be a restorers thread so that the past - the true past of what the car was can be saved for others to see when they actually restore the car not show case its hard life and beat down state. Thats another thread for that style. |
Oh I agree. But there are already many many many people that feel thesamba is a hostile environment. Here it's nicknamed "thedramba". People get turned off when they post a pic of their latest find and get replies telling them what to do with their car. We don't need to scare people away, we need to be welcoming them so that we can help them make good choices.
I know someone specifically that has one of the nicest type 3's anywhere. It's 99.9% flawless. He will never come back to thesamba, because someone here chased him off with "you should do this or sell the car to someone that will"
We need to be more engaging to people, lest we become as exciting as that other forum |

I was told under no uncertain terms that type34.com and the registry were dead. And to go to the world. Of course I found a lot of stuff on www.type34.com and was very appreciative.

type34.com, and the type 34 registry are not dead (they're the same now). They just don't see the traffic that the Samba does. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Oh, I understand alright. I was told by the same guy I should replace my "incorrect" 63 speedometer, with a correct 64 unit. But, all the paper work I have, says that the 63 unit was installed at the dealer for the original owner (it replaced the KPH unit, when the car was 1st sold), and ALL of the dealer service logs indicate ALL service was done at certain miles (not kilometers). My service booklet, and owners manual are in German, not english. Note, I haven't ordered a "birth certificate" yet, but I do have the German title, which matches the engine number to car (numbers matching). But the "lack of traffic" on either site, was my main reason for doing my build here on the Samba. I actually got my questions answered here more frequently, and even T-34.com gave me answers faster too (mainly because the number of Samba members there ).
I will say that most of the proceedures I used to fix certain parts of my T-34, came from the archives of T-34.com (the T-34 registry), and not T-34 World. I think the main reason for using that site (T-34.com), was that T-34 World's archives are too hard to access, unless you have a high speed connection, and an updated PDF reader on your computer. This makes that part of the site very user unfriendly. Add in that anyone can access the T-34.com's archives makes it more user friendly, and easier to use (the pages are JPEGs and plain text). It might just be my own opinion, but it sure seemed that way to me.
Note; I have nothing against T-34 World, but it just seems like the number of users that are active don't seem to be very high compared to the Samba's numbers. And when you're in the middle of a project, you really do want some answers to questions, and you'd like them in a timely manner. Add in that most T-34 owners are doing very long term projects, and you'll find that a large percentage "haven't gotten that far/or to that point" in their restoration yet. That makes trying to find info even harder. I really do think that's the hardest part of owning a T-34, getting information. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

The above thread to me embodies Type 3 Culture. At Least the culture to which I want to be a part of and embrace. The gathering of all walks of life from around the globe, different styles, opinions and ideas - focusing at one time on one event. It wasnt a us against them cruz it was WE as Typ 3 Enthusiasts having fun celebrating a car.
That was real face to face reaction, not this thread based no-interaction keyboard BS that we all get caught in on the Samba. Most real time events are like this.
It seems like the lack of face to face interactment also allows the meekest of us to grumble and be openly adverse and opinionated. My Grandpa used to always say - "Why do you think that, because you read it in the paper?"
I always laugh when I read people grumbling about information like a site not being this or that. You half empty guys out there. What is the flip side to that coin? Nothing or half full? Im sure everyone if faced with nothing would embrace half full.
In the end I could only hope that information gleaned from all those T34 sites as well as this club will help someone long after Im dead and gone. _________________

Until I clicked on the link, I thought you were talking about a Type 3 Invasion. That's where you get people from all walks of life, and even from different countries. The 2012 Invasion had people from the UK, Canada, I think Mexico, along with attendees from New England, the South East US, the Mid West, the West Coast, along with the Central US. That's a pretty diversified group of people gathering for 3 to 4 days, to talk TYPE 3. Very low key, and relaxed times at an Invasion. You should try it some time Jason.
Of course you'd have to leave your bus in the parking lot. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yes the Invasion is another great example of what I was trying to point out. But one is not better than the other? I would hate to think you thought that and were just yanking my chain Because that would be the "us against them" thing I was talking about Right? _________________

With regard to the Samba Type 3 community, the Invaders, the Type 34 Registry, T34 World, the 1500 Club, the 1600 Club (if it indeed exists), the oldtimers at type3.org, OCT3, the Type 3&4 Club, the Melbourne Contingent, and yes, even the Bay curious, I'm all for enjoying Type 3s in any and all ways possible, and the more groups the merrier. And when the factions get together at the Invasions or Central Coast cruises or whatnot it's even better. The idea of someone dictating how others should enjoy their cars is sad, and the idea that anyone would talk down another group in an effort to elevate their own really chaps my hide. It's not a competition folks, or at least it shouldn't be. _________________ 5/62 343
