Is there a type 3 parts book online anywhere?
The "Body" section isn't working on the 1500 club website. _________________ Patrick

Over the weekend, a friend posted some pictures on FB of a fresh find. I'm not gonna say barn, more like warehouse fresh find? It looks to have been tucked away a very very long time, but it's dry and pretty complete. And who just finds a '63 Sunroof T34? Lucky Guy

No. First VWs made in the USA were Rabbits starting in 1978. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

Germany but at the Karmann Ghia factory, not VW.
The floorpans are from the VW factory. |
Isn't there a link to something Lee maybe wrote up? History of the T34. Because to answer this right will almost start a new thread. _________________

Seat Recliners. You either love them or hate them.
I was curious as to how many people may have them tucked away in their stash or have actually used them on a car? I can remember one installation on a notch I believe - both driver and passenger. Ill look for those pics But you just dont see them. Why? Dont like them? I know ErikG does not care for them as they complicate things - and he like it clean and natural. I get that. But I know there are others out there that want them and cant get them due to cost or rarity. Its to the later people that I propose the following. Seat recliners from Porsche or Mercedes.
These are all Type 3 Related Recliners. Do you have a set?
Long ago in a time when one could go to the junk yard and find several T3s, bugs, buses and other old oddities languishing under the sun - slowly giving up their treasures to the vulture, hound and resuscitator of others, items of opportunity would present themselves. Like a blue tip bosch antenna on a early 70's Audi, $10 worth of quarters in a Golf ashtray you were pulling seat belts that cost $10 on check out or a Blaupunkt radio with all the T3 trimmings in a later Fastback. Real scores from junk safaris long ago. It was on one of these adventures that I discovered seat recliners on an old Mercedes I was pulling bakelite fuse holders from. I grabbed those bad boys with visions of installing them on my T3. See that first pic below. Thats them. But alas - I never did. Why? Well they were not an easy bolt on eal. I was afraid of what others might say as well I sold them on long ago on ebay. But I never forgot about them or recliners in general. Then years later I found a passenger side odd ball T3 one. Thats the pic up above in the blue notch. After I put it on I was surprised that the sky didn't fall, the IRS did not come after me and I had no deathly curse that I was aware of. Turned out nice I thought. What do you think?
So back to the obtainium of recliners. I bought these Mercedes ones recently for a song. Now I have visions again of installing them on a T3. If not on my new notch then on my 77 bus - albeit the passenger only, on a modified 74 seat to work with the captain chair.
My new ones.

I'm with Eric on this one all the recliners that I have seen look very big, awkward, and clumsy and and most of them just look kinda "in the way"...IMO it seems that there is very little to gain with them versus the stock clean original look so I have never really felt the need for them or cared enough to own a set simply because don't think there's much to gain and I can't get over the bulky factor I offen find myself being more into the simplicity of the stock and original stuff _________________ Wow look at that THAT'S A "SHOW CAR"!!

I prefer a clean, stock looking car with a few hidden modern touches...realizing that I'm probably in the minority. Period correct accessories are cool but just not for me.
Six things that I find interesting on other people's cars but would never put on mine:
1. Camping hinges
2. Front seat recliners
3. Mesh visor
4. Gravel guards
5. Interior rack
6. Rear window blinds
I'm on the fence about mudflaps. |

Jason- they will work on the Type 3 with some work. You'll need to take the seat covers off and drill holes and tack a nut inside the seat to fasten the recliners to. You'll need to shorten the rod by taking some out of the middle and then sleeve or weld it back together. Make sure you orient the two square cut ends exactly as they were before you sleeve or weld or you will wind up with a crooked back rest.
On the seat base, you will use a fastener only in the most forward hole- if you fasten them both you won't be able to flit the seat back forward to access the rear seat.
That's a nice set of early W108 recliners. If you wind up not using them, I'll buy them. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.
