PostPosted: Wed Jul 07, 2004 10:04 am    Post subject: 2 Tone Help Reply with quote

I'm getting my bug ready for paint soon, and I'm going with 2 tone. my problem is:
i want it to look professional. i know earl sheibe doesn't paint the top hinge completely (dead giveaway that it's done cheap) but the pros paint the whole hinge. but how do the pros paint the door jam? does the white go all the way to the inside, or only about a quarter inch.
if anybody has a picture of the 2tone doorjam where the latch is, that'd be great.

also, what's the best way to paint the hinge so that it doesn't get painted shut, or so that when i start moving the hinge, it doesn't crack and piss me off?

thanks
-dave

before spraying the second color, start by applying the fine line tape with the door in its final adjustment position, then remove the door and mask off the whole opening leaving the jams showing. actually this must be done for both colors. dont worry about the paint cracking on the hinge, just dont apply so much that it runs, and you will be ok with this.

so both colors continue the 2 tone pattern all the way to the inside? or does it stop just at the edge?

We (at my body shop) are in the process of two toning a 71. We plan on only going into the door jam until the small "hump" in the jam itself. But I agree with Chillkoot, as long as the jam paint is a straight line and you cant see the other color in the door seam, it will look fine!

i shot the outside...(i have a square with no hinges exposed) i didnt tape off the inner door jam when i shot it....when im ready to paint the interior i mask the jam, and im taking the 2 tone all the way inside.....i use an airbrush for the dash and doors, so makes masking much easier this way rather than removing the doors to paint the inside of them, etc.......

id open the door slowly when it is still tacking up, to avoid any chipping after it cures...just me... good luck
