PostPosted: Mon Jun 07, 2004 5:27 am    Post subject: IRS shock mounts Reply with quote

Before you start, I already used the search button to no avail. Sad
I want to box in the trailing arms of my '74, but have a question about shock mounts. Why can't I use the shock mount kit, that you weld into the box in kit, with my stock top shock mount? Is it too far rear?

I don't want to cut a hole in the wells to mount to the roll cage because of noise issues. Are there shock hoops that I can mount inside of the wheel wells? If not, can I fab a mount near where the stock mount was???

Any help is appreciated. Very Happy

I don't think there is enough room to use a comperable shock. You would loose travel. I have thought about what you want to do (fabbing a mount) because my ride only has a 4 point cage in it, but I just don't think it would ever work properly.

I'm using tubular beef kits on my stock trailing arms. They allow for stock shock mounts and they are lighter (I think), but can get snagged easier in the woods.

What about fabricating a mount at the stock position for the lower mount? I would use the tubular type, but already cut the stock mount off for the box in kit. Don't imagine it would be too hard.

Not sure, Anything is possible but with the box in kit you'll probably have to cut alot out of it in the center area so the shock can move. I modified my shock mount by raiseing it up some but I just cut the round aera out and then rewelded higher. Good luck, sounds like you have a challenge going on!

Mark D, Are these tubular kits still available or did you just fab one up on your own? I haven't seen one in years.

Prowlers was the ones selling/making them. The only other place I saw them was through Vics, but I'm not real sure he sells parts anymore.

Yea sorry prowlers is a parts supplier. IIRC a guy there actually created them (probably after seeing somewhere else, but he marketed them). Anyway, theres even a how-to article in one of the Baja edition (December) HotVW's a few years back for them.
