I suppose this verifies it is a 1500 block?? It says 1500 super on the cover. I don't know much about the old 'bug' style engines. (I know the 1700 pancake better.)

Thanks

Also, I drive this thing around being nervous about the smell. The engine smells hot but doesn't feel hot. It doesn't have much miles on it and has about 30 years of paint overspray on it that has made the black look grey on the top parts. I am hoping and assuming the smell is burning off the paint. No oil leaks on this thing, no smoke, nothing..... It is tight except I feel a little oil around the base of the generator stand I put on it.

"1500 Super" just means you have a mexican-made replacement oil pump cover.

I don't know why they stamped that on there (brand/model name?) but the scripting looks cool.

Yeah, it's a common misconception.

I used to think it was a Porsche 356 thing.

That 1500 super oil pump cover comes from an Okrasa kit they made in the late 60's... for a 1500. They're not that special so dont think you have a gold mine.

I just went and looked on my vintage speed web page and I dont mention them... sorry. But I do show the heads and carbs that go with it.

If that is true, then some company must have copied the design because my friend claims to have a box of just the covers with Mexican production information on it.

mine only has single port heads and a 28 pict carb

The guy who rebuilt this motor (could have been almost 30 years ago) is known for his quality of work, he passed away 4 years ago or I would ask him the questions.

Very interesting.... I know the *original* 1500 super covers were okrasa... I'll have to dig out a few 70's era magazines and find an ad. Do you have a better close up of the cover in that picture? The originals only had '1500 super' on them... no other markings.

I will try to find out.

I think it's just 3 horizontal bars.

I'd be interested in getting one of these covers for my 1500 SP, if your friend wants to sell one. Are those 6mm studs?
Thanks,

I guess I am back to my original question - does this mean it is a 1500, or will it fit any block?

thanks.........

I wonder what country that patent is from?

US Patent # 159998 relates to "Improvement in absorbing ammonia gas in water"

It will (should) fit anything but a 36er.

BTW, my 1500 plate is smooth on the front except for the '1500 super'.

yawn............#Sleep
http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=58976

these covers are NOT rare.
these covers are NOT from a type 3.
these covers are from an AFTERMARKET oil pump, from either brazil or mexico (i forget which right now).

i have one that says "1500 Super Patent Pending" on it. SO WHAT??!!! wooo, it's earlier than the ones with a patent number on it. BIG DEAL!!!

to answer the original question, NO, it does not verify a 1500 engine case. it does verify that you have an aftermarket oil pump cover (and maybe pump too), that's it. the serial number will confirm the vintage/age/original size of the engine.

if i took plate steel and made 50 oil pump covers and had the words "rare vintage empi part" stamped into them, would you believe it?
