What is the "factory" fuel sending unit for a 1958 Beetle? I have a euro beetle (LHD) w/semaphores.

pictures or links to what I should have would be great... still looking.

I'm p sure that the fuel gauge didn't show up in factory form until 1962.
What you likely have is an aftermarket gauge/sender.

OK! Well, that's a start. Then figuring out what sending unit I have is a different challenge. Does anyone know what this sending unit is?

Not a stock sending unit for sure especially since VW used mechanical sending units at least through 64'. Strictly speaking your picture is only of the leads go to your sending unit. The sending unit is going to be at the bottom of the tank. Do you have an electric fuel pump in tank as well? You probably need to pull the tank and take a look at everything.

That is a common period accessory VDO sending unit. I have the same one in my car and it works great.

Not super helpful but you can see what the sender looks like in two of these brochures.

Thanks! My problem is that I can't get it secured, and it doesn't ground out properly, so my gauge just keeps bouncing from E to F and back and forth. I don't know how to fix it...

Take it out, use alligator clips to ground the sender body to the car and work the float manually. If the gauge moves smoothly then re-evaluate the ground.

Most likely your wire wound track that creates the variable resistor has some bad spots and needs to be replace. That will cost about $20 in parts and a couple of hours to fix.
