I know this is probably a stupid question but i wanted to know. The one millionth beetle was a 1955 beetle but, what chassis number was it? Also is there any good sites out there that documented the production of the car?
Thanks.

| since it was built in. 1955 was change from jan.-dec. model year and vw changed to august 1, thru july 31,as model year... in 1955 so anything built after august 1,1955 is a 1956 model year.. first chassis no. for 56 model year was 929 513 body no. chassis numbers for july 1955 were 916 456thru 929 512 body numbers for july 1955 were 824 565 thru 828 328 AND 000 001 <----(see it) thru 008 056 it is in vw museum in wolfsburg..... |

| last car built in sept.1955 was 981 573 (chassis number) and engine number 1182 658 last one for October 1955 (chassis number) was 1008 157 engine number 1213 907 so this means chassis number 1000 000 was built in October 1955 so therefore the 1 millionth beetle was a 1956 not a 1955....... right Bruce? that is what i am talking about.... |

| see this is what i thought....it is a 1956 model built in 55. Cause i just wanted to clear this up cause if it were sold on the market it would be a 56 model...is the millionth beetle LHD or RHD? European model or US spec? I'm just curious |

There's tons of photos of it on the internet. Just do a Google image search. It is sitting at the museum at Wolfsburg.

Yes Bill, its a 56 model built in 55. The reason its labeled 1955 in the pics is because the Germans didn't buy into this model year fraud that's been going on in the USA for the last 50 years right away. If you had car number 1 000 001, built right after that millionth car, and it was registered in Germany, it would be called a 1955 VW.
The millionth car is a LHD special edition car. It has a ton of special parts that appeared on no other car. So its not a European spec, nor USA spec car. Its unique. |

| Its actually got a remarkable amount of miles on it. Up until then, no German car maker had ever made a million cars of one model before, so the car was paraded around Germany as a symbol of their economic recovery. |

Wasn't it donated to the Red Cross? I remember reading they got a few of the milestone cars, maybe not this one . . .
Anyway, if I owned a beetle made around the 1,000,000 mark I would bid on this till it hurt:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=2489021790&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT
And I'm willing to bet that, based on the packaging it is in, that it's an original. Cool piece. |

| My beetle is a '55 built on Febuary 2, 1955.....i think its like 196,000 beetle off from the millionth....which is alot....so it never spent its time on the same line as the millionth beetle...oh well....anyone know how many dealerships where in the US by 1955? did they take pride in the millionth beetle...like use its recognition to sell cars? Pictures in Brochures and what not? I'm really curious.... |
