At 16 it was my Mom's '68 Chevelle. At 17 I bought a '60 Ford Short Narrow that had a small block Chevy and a Muncie 4 speed ....ended up working on that more than driving it though...
Parents had several cool cars before I was old enough to drive. '58 Impala (word has it I was conceived in the back seat of that one ) '57 Chevy 2dr wagon, '59 Impala and '59 Biscayne, '63 Impala High Boy (straight axle front end) and a '63 Impala SS. Mom traded that last one in on a '66 Charger (BOO!) after the big D. Dad and I were PISSED! Still are... 35 years later.
Almost forgot Dad's '65 baja bug. That's what started the obsession for me! _________________ Two wrongs don't make a right...

I was driving in 1986 and bought my first car which was a 1975 Chevy Impala. The "brown bomber" was four doors, primer from the front clip back, and had huge holes in the floor board. It ate gas and was a nightmare to parallel park. _________________ the parts that you buy from me today, will fund my projects tomorrow... |

At age 16, I was driving a 1976 Ford Maverick 2-door with a 302 V-8 engine and automatic transmission. _________________ 1978 Super Beetle Convertible (Project)

At 16yo. I got a 66 Chevy van for my birthday. At that time I was deeply into MX racing. So the van was a natural for hauling bikes gear and friends to the races and pratice.
The main problem with the van when I got it was, the engine was flat worn out. So I had to replace the inline 6 with a newer one that was delivered to the house on the back of a wrecker.
Now, those vans had the engine between the seats with a walk-able space between the engine cover and the dash. The only way to get the engine out, was from underneath. I jacked the van as high as I could get it off the ground and lowered the engine to terra-ferma with a cherry picker. Problem was I couldn't get the engine out from under the van while on the jack stands. So in a moment of teenage brilliance.
I decided that the best way to get the engine out was to wrap the cherry picker chain around the front bumper of the van and lift the whole thing up.
Nothing bad happened. But the potential was definitely there.
Now 41 years later, I'm much more cautious when it comes to heavy things over my head and body.
I still miss that van. That thing made it all over the western states from So Cal to Idaho and back. It had too many Sierra Nevada Ski trips to count.
It was kinda like the image below. But not exactly. White wagon wheels, tall tires and a nifty floor vent in the front valence that when open on a hot summer day would blow outside air on your lower legs. Same color with white paint wrap all the way around the windows.

At 16 I was driving a gray 1962 VW. But that was my father's car and I wanted my own. So at 17 I bought a 1950 split for $85 and restored it with parts ordered through my local dealer. Everything was available. I drove that through my senior year of college and every break that I got home during college. 1972 VW highroof camper conversion. One boss called it the fu#*truck, the other boss called it the whore house on wheels, the best friend called it the antichrist, & the girlfriends parents called it "oh hell no". It had a bumper sticker in the back window that said "don't laugh, your daughter might be in here", it was quite appropriate. _________________ Everybody born before 1975 has a story, good, bad, or indifferent, about a VW.

My first car, at age 17, was a '71 Corolla, pretty much like this one:

Two cars in the garage when I learned to drive.
1) 1965 Dodge Polara station wagon.
2) 1971 VW Type 3 Fastback (still mine!)
Then they bought me a '67 Bug which I fixed up; later stolen:
You can see the Buick Apollo in the garage, which replaced the Dodge about 1974. Nova-based car with a Buick 350 V8 under the hood! |

Dad's 1960 Porsche 356B Roadster. I still have it. Dad's Frankenstein 1968 Beetle with a '69 engine and the Automatic Stikshift transaxle. POS. Thankfully that car is long gone. |

75 Plymouth valiant 4 door slant 6 225 automatic. Two years later got a 74 bug and proceeded to destroy it, sold before it shelled out. Took the money and bought a much nicer 73 bug and that's where it all started. 41 years later I've got a 74 bug |

Most days I drove a 1972 VW Beetle. Some days I drove a 1966 Dodge pickup. That summer I bought and fixed up a 1965 Chevy stepside. _________________ Brian

At 16? Nothing.
I couldn't get a license due to some earlier years of being a Juvenile Delinquent.
Once I was 18 and had my records expunged, I joined the Army without knowing how to drive.
I learned to drive in a Humvee in the swamps of Louisiana while I was in.
So, I got a military license before my civilian one.
My first car that I owned was a 70 Bug after I got out. _________________ My Photobucket for my Herbie Project - http://s1288.photobucket.com/user/TK-439/library/Herbie?sort=3&page=1
