|
|
I'm ready to do the bc/cc on my 67 bug and looking for something better than my little compresor and primer gun to finish it off. A friend has a turbine spray system that he will loan me. Has anyone used one? Are they as good or better or worse than a conventional compressor/gun combo. Among other claims, the system claims to be able to deliver a high CFM of air (60-80 cfm) at a low pressure (4-5 psi).
Go for it?... Don't touch it with a 10 foot pole...any input will be helpful. |

I have used several HVLP turbine sprayers with excellant results. I had good results with a Lex-Aire, and a Croix sprayer. I now have a 4 stage Apollo turbine sprayer which works great. I have been able to spray material that is very thin to thick material. The nice thing about turbine units is NO moisture ever comes out of the paint gun. The hose pumps out warm air. Also the unit, since it doesnt need a compressor, can be pluged in anywhere and used. Very portable also. This is my main method of spraying in the shop and I have an 80 gallon compressor available . Thanks for the reply. As far as shooting with the sprayer, is it the same as conventional equipment? It has a siphon type gun with it. Do I use the same air specs as other equipment? I'm a newbie to this and just want to make sure. Any recommendations? I'm planning on shooting the interior, fender wells, trunk and engine compartment first to get the hang and feel of it before I do the exterior. Thanks again,,,Dan |

Your unit should have some recommendations in the instruction manual as to settings and tip sizes. And they are different from manufacturer to manunfacturer. Also the 3 different units I used had 3 different size tips and nozzle combos as far as the viscosity of the material you are spraying. For real thin materials to very thick and heavy sound deadeners they have tips. Problem is each tip combo was an extra 100 bucks or so. The units I have used all had a standard cup with the pickup at the bottom. I havent tried the gravity feed units yet. Yes , by all means do a little practice on an old hood or whatever. It was a nice change to use these units and be able to see across the shop. Before there was so much fog and overspray it was covering everything in the shop. You will get some overspray but nothing like a standard gun. Good luck. Chuck P |

Which system is your favorite. I was looking at the Accuspray 23k but was
wondering how the Apollo was working out? |

The Apollo unit I have now is much better than the Croix or LexAire I had. Those were fine units but the Apollo has a much better gun and turbine unit. I got the 4 stage unit, which has enough power to run 2 guns at one time. The company sends out parts right away and the unit has nicely machine parts in the spray gun. Price is more than the other two but worth it. I believe they were the first company to put out an HVLP Turbine sprayer in 1966. Their web site is HVLP.com. Chuck P |

I just painted my car last weekend with the turbine sprayer. WOW....it turned out great! I don't think it could have been any better with a compressor. Now I'm thinking about buying this type of sprayer. Initially I was going to try it just on the underside of the fenders and the interior. After seeing the results of that I decided to use it on the whole car. I'm glad. Now I don't have to worry about buying a $1000 compressor! I'll post some pictures as soon as I can figure out how to do it.
I'm excited!! |

Ive used one for many years , doing interior wood items as doors and trim in the house a while back and more recently all VW work. Ive had great success with the Apollo unit (hvlp.com). They were the first in the turbine sprayer business. Chuck P |

Check the Gallery photos from yesterday. I posted three pictures of the freshly painted bug. It's bright red. I used a T.P. sprayer. That's all it says on the unit. The guy I borrowed it from says it was quite expensive. |

That looks really great. What setup did you get to use for that? |

I use one every day, mine works great. I use an Accuspray with 3-stage turbine. |
