My band Calexico was in the movie "Collateral" a scene with Jamie Foxx walking through an East L.A. Bar with one of our songs playing. |
The same Calexico I'm listening to on Radio Paradise right now? A song called "Sinner In The Sea?" _________________ '71 Ghia cabriolet |

Brendan Frasier wrecks a '71 yellow Ghia coupe in Monkeybone (2001) when a gigantic inflatable monkey in the back accidentally starts to inflate, causing the car to be stuck in reverse. The Ghia is not actually shown being wrecked in the released version, but you can see it in the deleted scenes on DVD. The most interesting thing about the Ghia is the sunroof, through which the growing monkey balloon emerges. Since they didn't really show the Ghia being wrecked in the theatrical release, the makers of this movie should not have actually performed the dastardly deed. |
Zombie post resurrection.
The sunroof was a ragtop and in the movie it does show the trashed back of the Ghia post wreck, not the actual wreck. Even so, it was good to see a Ghia representing. _________________ 1964 Karmann Ghia Coupe

Zodiac 2007 with Gyllenhaul and Downey,jr. -- I did not see this movie on the list yet. It features 3 Karmann Ghias. The first is the car (1958? and off white) of the second couple to get killed. THe second is the Killer's car (1968? teal) and the 3rd is a yellow convertible. There is a good long look at the 1958. The Killer's car pulls up to the trailer, has the E-brake sound and the door close sound. Awesome! This is supposed to be a film based on a real unsolved crime story. I wonder if these were the actual make, color and model's of Karmann Ghias owned by the victims and killer. As the camera pans the 1958 you hear the police dispatch describing the car. If the other car was the killer's - that would be an infamous car for Karmann Ghia. |

I believe some pains were taken to make the cars in the movie as realistic as possible.
IIRC, Scott and the lads at KGPR have one of the car doors with the Zodiac killer's message scrawled on it, as used in that movie: http://www.karmannghia.com/page.asp?pageid=39 _________________ David Ruby

I could be wrong, but it looks like the car in the new 'cartoon' Experian Insurance commercial is a Ghia. Anyone seen it? |

Sure looks like the animator was at least inspired by the Ghia (but didn't have any reference material for the interior).

Don't know if there are any jazz fans out there but I just watched the Ken Burn's documentary "Jazz" again and noticed this still. "Free Jazz" great Sonny Rollins with his '60s coupe. Any guess on the year of this car?

not sure. but I think he played Selmer Tenor Saxes back then. He is the man; makes me proud to be a ghia owner and a jazz player and teacher. |

'60 thru early '64 model year.
Biggest clue seems to be the clear blinker lens with what appears to be the chrome fastening ring- utilized through late 1963 ('64 model year). Though honestly the lens appears to be missing in this shot.
Any additional clues as to the wiper arm style? License plate format? Nose emblem style? |

BTW, I found out that this photo was from his '65 release, "Sonny Rollins on Impulse. " Rollins (Newk) might have gotten away with carrying 2 tenor saxes in a KG but us drummers would have to drive a bus to the gig.
But now we all KNOW that Ghias are hip! Airegin and Saint Thomas forever! |

Yes indeed, the kit fits....better with a 20" bass drum then a 22", anything bigger won't go. I haven't tried putting my vibraphone in, but I know the marimba fits along with the accordion. When I lived in Los Angeles I had a bay window bus, I would leave the kit set up and just put in the bus and cover it with black cloth. I love that picture of Sonny Rollins, thanks for posting, will have to get that record now. |
