Ah ha NovocaineKarma,
I obviously know you by another name...or is that your real one
The VW version of the Judson was introduced in 1956 so if you're being picky it isn't period for your '53 but as you were talking about installing a 36hp or even larger this fact won't concern you too much.
A friend of mine had a '53 Zwitter and his main moan was the gear ratios in the stock 25hp trannie. 2nd and 3rd are too widely spaced. Climbing a hill 2nd could be too low geared and 3rd too high...it was a constant up a shift, down a shift, up a shift down a shift. As I've said the Judson will give that boost where you need it...extra torque for hill climbing.
For those who think the Judson will cause you to throw a crankshaft the reason why early the early VW cranks had a habit of failing was they were over-reved. Push the whippy crankshaft at the top end and you will have trouble. Supercharging doesn't produce it's power through spinning the engine faster. The gains are through more efficient cylinder filling and combustion all within the same rev range.
The original Judson Instructions recommended gear changing at all the usual points and to occasionally hang onto a gear longer for quick (??) overtaking. You'll not have a street screamer, after all we're talking about a performance add-on introduced half a century ago!!
Oh yeah...thanks for backing me up Dave...perhaps we should start a "Judson Mafia" _________________ John.

I have a 1600cc in my '52 and it goes in and out without having to take off the heater boxes or mess around with the tin.

What year tin are you using
All the ones i could find required alot of triming
And what year heaterboxes

if you want a car to be a daily driver a 25hp car is not the way to go. if you only need to drive a few miles to work thats another story. i would remove the 25hp engine and the non syncro trans and go with at least 36hp and a later 50's gearbox. i had a 25hp car non syncro and in traffic it was not fun. i had a car that had the 25hp and crashbox trans updated to '58 trans and running gear and it was a blast and very drivable. it was a driver, and i drove it quite a bit.
just my 2 cents, from my personal experience |

Well, IMO a 25HP isn't great for high speed traffic, but for traffic jams, 1HP suffices. The issue I have with using a 25HP is the availability of certain 25HP only parts, and wearing them out. So, IMHO if you upgrade to a 36 or a Judson 36 you are goin oldskool
and there's a higher availability of parts (the judson being the exception there)
But then again, you could get out the old cuttin torch, the Air chisel and horn shoe in a 2110 with a later transmission.

Keep the 25 engine!! Any car with the original engine is a bonus!! Rebuild it and use it for easy driving and for going to shows. Don't pound it too hard because if you break somthing, its going to be hard to replace it!!
These guys that say you can drive a 25 at 60-65 mph on the highways are crazy!! Maybe the reason that the 25 hp stuff is so hard to find is because everything is being used up by these guys that want to drive these old engines too hard.
My Split came with a 36 and I'm still trying to find the correct engine. Use a 36 if you want to drive hard as you can still buy nos pistons, cylinders, etc and there are lots of parts around.
Keep it, but don't abuse it!! Take this advise from a vintage guy! |

You can also bore the heads and case for the 36hp piston and cylinders for more umph. This is not uncommon due to the cost of 25hp piston and cylinders and will help your power issue. _________________ Wanted: Bus sunroof front header bow, any condition |

Hi NovocaineKarma,
As always HP is in the mind of the beholder!! Some volks like us are happy with 25-40 HP engines in our type 1s (in type 2s is a differant story). While others will not be happy with anything less than a V-8 engine... Your real trouble will more likely be the early brakes. We have found the much more powerfull, early 356 Porsche front brakes to bolt on our 1952 sunroof for our safety.
