Ok, last "mystery hole" question (for now) regarding my 58 double-door panel. This picture shows 4 small holes at the front edge of the cargo floor. Two of them are just behind the walk-thru section, and there is one behind each seat back. Factory, or not?

Got to be a drain hole.
FWIW that is the same rubber plug used in your thermostat flap bumpers. _________________ WANTED:

Drain hole w/plug. Hmmm...Maybe facilitate assembly line... pick points. |
I think it was a drain hole for the dipping process when they dipped the entire Bus in the tanks. _________________ How to Post Photos

april or so. it was an intermittent change at first. the above bus was made in june 1958, and is solidly in the lipped decklid era. I have had at least four '58s with original to the bus lipped decklids. (and I am in the august first model year change camp, none of this pre-dating early model year crap) _________________ .

This 58 bus has a pretty cool story....
It is a German 1958 standard VW Bus and was originally found by the PO in a field with a tree growing up through the engine compartment!
It was rescued from the tree and stored in a large shed for about 18 years when I came along and bought it from the PO in NC and brought it to FL!
I am almost done with replacement of the lower 6-8 inches of the body with as much metal and as little filler as possible...
In the mean time I am enjoying the 1776 cc engine/ dual carbs and tranny with no reduction gears! It cruises on the interstate at 80 mph no problem.
The body work is coming along faster than anticipated.
I bought it with all seats including the middle seat, had them all restuffed and reupholstered.
I had a new wiring harness installed, new brakes all the way around, newly rebuilt 1776 cc engine with dual weber carbs as mentioned earlier, 67-68 bug transmission installed to replace the reduction gears, drop spindles installed in the front, new drums and tires, and a few additional items to get it up and running.

I picked up this 1958 Panel bus over the weekend down in Florida. Drove it 470 Miles to my house in South Carolina.
vin# 293521 Which I believe was built in Sept 1957
This is my first bus from the 50's and I am in love already. |
