Ok, so we are now at that point on the restoration of my Horizon Blue '56 Ragtop Bug (which I went to see today and he is soooooooo handsome)!!!!!!!!! What is the consensus on the gasoline tank color? Or, to ask a different way, is there no objection from the gurus to the blue-grey L29 (in satin)? Thanks.

If you're having a shop paint the tank, see if they can provide a sample from the L29 formula, and see how close it is. They should be able to mix it at 80% gloss, or whatever you specify. If it looks good, go for it...you can be the guinea pig. Cool

Ok so I finished sanding out my tank tonight...... Sanding the clear down to get ready for the L29 blue grey.

I have hunted down the mix for Glasurit:
VOLKSWAGEN - L29 BLUE GREY
Glasurit Line 22

Target ltr kg

Base Amount Cumulative UNIT
M26 358.3 358.3 g
M60 290.3 648.6 g
M974 39.4 687.9 g
M77 13.1 701.1 g
522-322 380.5 1081.5 g

I am not sure what we are going to do about matching the gloss but will let you guys know.

Yep I am now thoroughly confused as to what color I should paint my 58 tank and am really thinking of just painting it black since everything I have read here is so damn confusing. Not to mention if I choose to paint it Blue/Grey it probably still will not be a good match......

Errrrrrrrrrrrrrrr damn it I am confusedddddddddddddddddddddddd!!!!!!!!!!!!

Here is a pick of my original un-painted tank in my 58 HT Beetle. While not the best pic, the tank is not black, and is infact the blue/gray

Well, here is where I wound up on mine. Absolutely 100% correct, debateable - do I like it - darn right I do. Critics - they're just jealous.

Right or wrong, the blue/grey colour looks great. Just to stir the pot a little more, I've noticed that all of the tanks have bee restored in full gloss paint. Any of the paint experts posting want to hazard a guess as to the amount of flattening agent should be added to get the correct factory sheen?

Please don't mistake my comments as critisism. The attention to detail in your car continues to amaze me every time I see a new photo of it. I'm trying my best to sympathetically restore/preserve my 56 survivor. Glossy paint would stand out like a sore thumb.

There are several types. This is an HK....with embossed "Autolampen Sicherungen" on the lid. It has the early Porsche/VW base. They made one for Mercedes and BMW and also a "generic" version that had a different assortment of lamps and fuses. They also came with 6 volt or 12 volt bulbs, depending on the YOM. I purchased this particular one several years ago from Andy Spilkoman.................but I have seen incomplete ones come up on German eBay occasionally. Few are marked with the HK engraving though. Expect to pay around $175 for a good one without dents, but the Porsche guys have driven the price of this particular version to over $300 anywhere near this condition. Most of them are Red............but you can find black ones and blue ones as well.

From the factory, would the tanks have been spray painted or dipped?

Dipped. Pretty much everything that isn't a body panel (engine tin, access covers, brackets, etc.) was dipped.

im trying to figure out a for sure fact on this one detail about convertibles thats puzzling me: whats correct for the gas tanks on 1956 to 1960 beetles? I need to know what karmann did at their factory different than wolfsburg did for sedans and ragtops. Are humptanks in convertibles painted:

1) paint matched the convertible's body color top side and bottom side
2) L29 grey
3)paint matched the convertibles body color top side and L29 grey on the bottom side?

any pics of unrestored cars with their original issued tank unmolested would really help!

also, if you still have the original trunk liner and wiring covers in place, are they painted light grey ( how wolfsburgwest sells them) or are they paint matched to the convertible's body color?

The colour of the tank has been discussed so many times now... Earlier discussions have come to this conclution:

(Following does not apply to standards!, export only)
up to april 1951: Same colour as the car.
from april 1951 to mid 1955: Sedan: Matt black, Cabrio: same as the car.
from mid 1955: bluish grey on most cars.

Best regards,
Ken.

but convertibles up to 1960 had color matched tanks ( at least the top side)

When asking the birth certificate for my car, VW sent me an extract from a book in german which lists every colours of the body and of the different parts of the cars. Here is what is written concerning tanks :

- 47-49 : umbra (which is some kind of earth brown : http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Umbra_(Farbe) , link is broken)
- 49-52 : car colour
- 52 - 10/52 : blue grey (without ref)
- 10/52 - 08/60 : blue grey L29
- 08/60 - : grey black L43

I don't have anything about convertibles though, but I will tend to take those informations as correct for sedans.

I tend to suppose black tanks are replacement tanks. For instance, the tank on my car is black, without anything unde this black, and I'm sure they wouldn't have sanded it before painting it (hey, they didn't do it for the body...)
