My Shasta report.
I started this shasta trip with a motor swap the week before as my motor had 60 lbs in #1 so threw in a unknown 1600 dp I had gotten with a bus a while back.
I got it running and packed the bus for shasta. I said I was going to take it easy this year. Well that lasted until we hit dirt on Bear Valley rd. We cruised around the lake bed with a few buses on the way to the rampage spot.
The RS was cool lots of buses and folks working on there rigs. There was shooting and a great fire. We got a good start and hit some great roads heading towards Hull MT. I talked to a local that said the gate was locked at the top. Kevin broke a tranny. had another and preformed a great swap. We went the m1 and then cut off on a road to Covelo we hit a lock gate 5 miles form Covelo one bus made it through cattle pasture with some digging. went back to get my bus and folks were not keen on driving through the pasture some did and we descended in to Covelo and got gas meet the locals and the police gave us an escort to the local dinner. We ate had headed to the bridge where we camped under it.
Woke up and checked oil and what not and headed up the hill to the road made it. Went back down to help the other bus up. Lance had a problem and split his tranny in half. We decided to send a runner (Richard) to Christopher's for a tranny. Removed the motor and 2 piece tranny from green truck. Got new tranny and got together after figuring out he had a 1 year only set up.
Hauled ass to Shasta as a big group. Had a Blast I will do it again. Shit always happens on Shasta and it does not go as planed but that's life. I had a great time with some very cool people. _________________

Thanks Lou, great report.
I know what it's like to -try- to take it easy on the SST, doesn't always work out
I just wish everybody had the courage to get around that gate like you and the other dudes -would have prevented the maelstrom of broken shit that teams suffered in those mountains.
Love the police escort in Round Valley too, epic stories! |

I'm guessing this means cell phone coverage non existant?
I suspected as much. I know I've got a CB radio here someplace- 6 months to find it.

Really GREAT VIDEO! The music selection can really make or break any video, event, date, you name it. Old school surf music, the high speed GOPRO edits from location, to location, really hit the spot! The feeling the video gives with those tracks, the buses, etc, was the same feeling I remember from one of Charlie's post-OCTO parties where he had a surf band set up playing right in his garage, alongside the pizza, beer, and buses.
That was my band at the time, The Dynotones. |

This is the trip of my dreams. Sadly I don't qualify with my 1970 bus. As I am not a rich man, I'll never have a splitty at this point. Shoulda bought one 20 years ago when they more affordable. I do these trips by myself on the Humboldt county backroads now. |

If it's the trip of your dreams you should try and get a co-pilot spot for the next SST. Humboldt is the last of rough splitties they are all over the place! |

I agree with woodslat! Get the word out that you want to co-pilot. You'll have a great time, and it'll usually cost a lot less. |

Whoa! Cut with the "Can't" do attitude! Way to represent your OWN BACKYARD! Letting a bunch of other drivers come blast through your living room while they attack and bring back the trophies of your land... Tell you what! If that was MY back yard and I knew cats were ripping through once a year taking the glory and yanking the county flag from the courthouse pole in the process... it would b ON!
If there is any one thing this trip is about, it's about being resourceful, doing more with less, taking trash and making it useable again, proving to everyone that you won't stop when the hype of couch goons professes otherwise. Don't take the BS that "splits are expensive" If you want to rock a split, try opening just ONE eye up in your neck of the woods, and then the tool box! Yeah, you see idiotic international split pricing with paint in the classifieds, but you ain't in the classifieds in Humboldt! You're IN THE LAND WHERE THEY'RE COMING FROM!!
Check yourself before you wreck yourself! Find AC Mack on here who lives in Eureka and has done the trip. Team up with him and either rock the trip with him, with someone else, or do as all SST Veterans could do inside a day in your neighborhood absolutely guaranteed: find your new split bus (for cheap) and open your tool box! Every last one of us will be behind you and root you on!
You have 6 months. SIX MONTHS! I could populate a planet in 5! Now go find your bus!
Who else needs motivation??

Always good motivation.
But is anyone else afraid of Brian populating a planet...and so quickly? _________________ 9th Owner of a 1971 Tintop Westy

Okay, okay, I'm on it! Miles and Miles of backroads up here and no Sheriff after 6pm. State Troopers only patrol main roads and only go off road if someone is being killed, it's sweet! I've got friends that work in Forestry that can tell me what roads are gated(not many up here) Would depend on the snow fall too, some of the passes into Cali are pretty high but passable. We could drop down into Happy Camp and then into Hoopa, just some ideas going on in my head for now. It would be a different trip for sure, Southern Oregon back country is very raw and wild!
Need to start looking at them maps!
