As best I can tell, that straight section of road in North Dakota is around 15 miles without a turn. Please blow up the photo to full screen size to see it in full.

I love driving through the Dakotas and Eastern Montana. The wide open space is mind blowing.

After visiting Devil's Tower, Cuddy wanted to double back North and East to hit North Dakota from Wyoming. It doesn't look like much on the map, but it added 250 miles to the trip.
I was against it, but, what the he'll...
Turned out to be one of the most beautiful parts of the trip, especially Eastern Montana. We even got to see some cattle loose on the highway, with cowboys on quads chasing them.
But I gotta say, two jobs which would get my vote for soul crushing monotony, barbed wire fence maintenance and roadside mower. My God, there's amazing lengths of fencing out there. And I can't imagine mowing that much flat, straight roadside.

Funny you mention the fencing. 20 years ago a friend of mine decided to haul his family out this way from the Midwest for a visit. Other than flying over to Vietnam in 66, he had never been west of central North Dakota. He and the family were blown away by the scenery, but one big thing that stuck out for them was that every single mile of roadway was fenced. Montana is nearly 800 miles across, and almost 400 miles tall. That is a huge amount of barbed wire!

I was also blown away by ND. I was there last week for some phenominal pheasant hunting. We drove from Regent to Montana. I was amazed how flat it was then all the sudden you are in Mountains.
