I sure do love getting off the beaten path. I've had to turn back in my '83 Westy (wasserboxer) more than a couple of times just because I didn't want to knock my propane tank off or whack my exhaust. I think that even 1 1/2" to 2" of additional ground clearance would open up a lot more country than I'm currently able to visit. Anyone out there done this? Or know of anyone who has? |

A fellow I know had the Jagdwagen (syncro crew cab) at Everybus a couple years ago, and I was checking it out - he had some about 2" spacers on top of the springs (I think - they might have been on the bottom) but that gave a couple inches of lift. He had ordered them from somewhere, so yes, they are available...sorry I can't give more specific information...I don't think he's on the Samba but perhaps he is... _________________ <---Air Cooled Search & Rescue Team - STICKERS & T-shirts for sale!

I've seen some pretty radical lifts on some synchros before. If you start seartching on Vanagon.com and hitting the links on the different web pages you will eventually run into them. Notice a lot of them overseas. _________________ This thread SUCKS!!! |

Thanks for the link to the springs on ebay but 4" scares me . I may be wrong but it's always been my understanding that when you start lifting over 2" you can wreak havok with steering and suspension geometry. If I could find some 1 1/2" coil springs I'd get real serious. |

You could go with the 4 inch lift and cut a coil off...
That is, if a Vanagon can use a cut coil...
Hotrod brain functions are seeping into this thread. I'm sorry, I'm looking for an aircooled as we speak! |

Steve Schwenk makes springs that lift an inch or two. He is to be found at the syncro yahoo group. Smallcar also just came out with springs that do the same lift, http://www.smallcar.com/025ss.htm is the place to look at those.
Both are about 400 bucks for the set of four. |

Anyone know what the difference between 2 wheel drive and synchro springs are? I assume they aren't interchangeable. _________________ This thread SUCKS!!! |

Are the control arms on the syncro the same as a regular vanagon?

Nope, the whole front end is whacko cuz of the goofy CV joints. (I think, I am pretty sure). _________________ -Dan

Check out any differences between the Synchro rear driveshafts and yours. Lifting the rear end of yours could piss off the CVs.

The front suspension on the syncro's was designed by Steyr-Daimler-Puch.. The same people responsible for the Unimog and other european goodies... Even though another company designed it, The springs and struts are similar You should be able to use stock syncro springs to get a little lift. If that is not enough , go to www.syncro.org and look at the upgrades section and they will give you a little blurb on the three basic manufacturers of lifts. I am using about 1.25 over stock syncro. these springs don't lift much, but the rate is much higher to handle westys...Good luck |

Oh yeah.... the syncro uses the same CV joints as the 2wd...and you can get about 19" when measured from center of hub to lip of wheel well before they start to have problems. I also failed to mention that you would havt to use the syncro shocks as well(although you probably already knew that).... If you need more flex, www.fastforward.ca sells 108mm CV kits(prety much the same as Porsche 930) conversions.. |
