HI there,
I'm going to rebuild my engine on my 69 Bus my self. I'm nervous about doing it but that is how you get over it.
I'm looking for any suggested reading from some on line sites. Also I have been getting parts from CIP 1 and have been happy with them, do you have any suggestions on places to order any parts I will need.
Thanks for your time.

This is great! hey, only one way to learn and that's hands on.

I suggest aircooled.net for parts and tech help.

Also the Tom Wilson book -

First of all....good for you. The best way to know your VW is by doing the work yourself. Secondly, I would have the Bentley and Muir's idiot books to guide me. If you want visuals you can always order the Bug me video on engine rebuilding. For parts, CIP1 has just about everything, they may not be the cheapest but they do save you a lot when they provide free shipping. Locally you could try Peek Performance there in MD. They could be a good source for advice/parts too. Good luck and let us know how you are progressing, Todd.

A great book. Read it cover to cover and keep it open when building the engine.

In addition to the words already spoken, here's some basic newbie tips:
get a torque- master- best tool ever for getting off the gland nut. sure beats jumping on a breaker bar. it's $50-75 well spent. (In fact, i wish somebody would market a "engine specialty tool package" with a torque-master, pump puller, case splitter, dizzy drive puller, etc.)

make sure your work area is CLEAN.

document the WHOLE teardown. take pics of everything. nothing is more frustrating than getting it torn apart and not knowing how it goes back together.

Bag and tag every part, as soon as you take it off. it's amazing how many little nuts, bolts and parts disappear when your weekend rebuild ends up taking two months to complete.

Spray every fastener with PB Blaster at least a halfd an hour before hitting it with a wrench, then spray each fastener just before you attack it. your studs will thank you.

Take your time. when you think you're getting in over your head, take a break, before you break something. and don't be afraid to come back here for more advice. it's only a stupid question if you ask AFTER you screw up.
