I'll be painting my 66 soon with PPG delstar single stage. Will 7.5 quarts give me 4 coats over the entire car, i.e. everything on a non-pan-off restoration except the insides of the fender areas and the package tray area? if not, how many coats will. Thanks |

The answer to your question is complex, and depends on numerous factors.
The kind of gun....HPLV?, the temp, how your gun is adjusted, how YOU paint, the translucency of the coats, etc.
Could I put 4 coats on with 7.5 quarts? Hell yes.
Could my buddy? Hell no. He would get 2.
You have to know how YOU paint -vs- the coverage recommendations.
Painting and bodywork is all about experience. Trial and error.
Good luck, and sorry if my answer didn't help. |

Even using a non HVLP conventional gun I used before I got HVLP's I could get the entire car painted with the 1 gallon of DAR, the 3 quarts of reducers and the pint of hardner ( approx 7.5 qts you speak of)
But that was 1 tack coat and 3 WET coats... I paint very wet so like was stated it will depend on your method/skill/style and your spray equipment.
If you have HVLP you will not have any trouble getting it all covered. |

Yeah, thanks for the responses, I'm using a Sata rp, which is their conventional gun but it has higher efficency than the HVLP I use for primering. The RP produces a better finish than even Sata's HVLP provides. Thanks alot for the info, I have a feeling I paint pretty wet, as I generally lay down alot of paint. |

also depends on "type" of paint. i painted a beetle many years ago dodge viper blue. (dont ask). that color is the pits! it doesnt cover worth a shit. i painted a mazda rx-7 a while back which was a tri coat process. another hellish job! coverage is important so dont skimp, but dont lay it on like blacktop either! also your epoxy primers/sealers, play a part in basecoat coverage.........painting a car white, use the white DP........black = black DP. so on and so on. good luck! |

I too have painted a car Dodge Viper GTS Blue Pearl Mica.
It went on like glass though.
It should have. the dealership got me for $500.00 a gallon without reducer. Just the color. |

the viper blue is one of the nicer blues i have seen. im heading to south carolina tonight from NY to pick up a 69 chevy c-10 pick up with my pops. he bought it on ebay last week and its painted viper blue. i honestly think the viper blue has lost its flair as being cool...........im more into "vintage" colors these days. i did paint one of my street bikes viper blue and it looked SICK!!!! good luck with your fat boy! |
