Yep, high gloss high temp, and baked it at 195 deg F for 3 hours, too.
Yep, I've got an engine, the original EA code with a 1.8L overhaul about 10 years ago, only 2 years and maybe 25Kmi on the overhaul. Heads look really clean, pistons too. _________________ Lane

Well...it's now got dished pistons, so a 7.3:1 CR (more or less) 1.8L with D-Jet should produce about 73 hp (it's the same config as the '73 Cali 412, and that's what it's spec'd at). Since everything's in really good shape, I'm just re-sealing and re-assembling, but down the road I want to build a HC 1.8L with D-Jet.
BTW, the AT is out, too, and I'm doing a complete overhaul on it since it's been off the road so long, and the parts are still available.
I'm a good 2 weeks from kicking the tires and lighting the fires (other than the Eber's fire ) _________________ Lane

BTW, the painting's happening before the rest because I got a few days with low humidity, a rare happening in Houston! I usually can't paint in Feb/March due to the humidity and low temps, it causes blushing. _________________ Lane

Yeah, I'm planning on polishing the combustion chambers and the piston crowns, like I did on the MGB a few years back. I can imagine it being even more important on an AC engine. _________________ Lane

Well since you never drove the car you wont tell the difference, I did this with my brown van and it was VERY noticable, the Engine seemed alot more responsive. This is with dual carbs, I dont really know how it will help with FI, but I am sure it wont hurt. _________________ 65 Bus, 72 Bus, 63 bus, 98 Golf

Today I finished sandblasting the front half of the engine blower housing, and 3-4 other minor pieces of tin, and painting the blower housing half. New Ford Gray, and it looks nice, pics when I get them. Still have 3-4 more minor pieces, and the rear engine hanger bar to prep and paint. Oh, yeah, I replaced the broken-off charcoal canister purge nipple on the blower housing with a short length of 1/2" stainless tubing epoxied in place.
We now have a small beach in the back yard instead of a muddy hole, courtesy of the sandblaster, 500 pounds of play sand, and 10 hours of my sweat _________________ Lane

Latest...I reassembled the fan housing and the stuff that hangs on it, and tried to paint 4-5 pieces of minor engine tin. One engine hanger-to-body bracket made it OK, and is now being baked. The other bits blushed badly ...the RH is only 46%, and that's low for Houston. What's a guy got to do to get high-gloss black paint to work consistently??? Well, after the rains come tomorrow, it'll be Saturday before the weather will allow more sandblasting and painting, so I'll move on to something else, maybe the engine.
I wonder what the wife would think about a sandblaster beach in the house, hmmm _________________ Lane

Wow, just checked out your tin pics in the gallery! All I can say is they look sweeeeet! I think maybe you are looking too close and have seen them too long, lol, since I think they are beautiful! So does the baking help with making the finish stronger? The valve covers I just sealed and painted got ripped up when I put them on! You are doing it right the first time and that is gonna be great later! Funny about the beach! lol! I'm so close to pulling my sliding glass doors and bringing my car in the dining room and then seal the area with plastic, lol! I hate the garage...! I used to have my motor cycle in the dining room on a oriental rug in there, lol!
It was cleaner though then me,lol! You guys are making the crew want to get busy! It's coming along great!! bill |

Maybe you could get them powdercoated at a shop? Also there's that hobby-level powdercoating gun from Eastwood- might be crap, I don't know, seem like it should work, and since you're baking the parts anyway... _________________ '74 412 wagon

Well, there's baking, and then there's BAKING. Powdercoating requires BAKING, with a dedicated oven, facilities to hang the stuff, etc. The kitchen oven works well for small stuff when you paint it, just let it dry a bit before putting the stuff on a sheet of foil on the top rack. wouldn't work for powdercoating.
Yeah, after all the work I've put into painting, powdercoating is looking better all the time _________________ Lane

| So, do you think its worth the cost to have parts powder coated over a paint and baked on finish? I think your parts look so great! I guess you still have to clean the parts either way! Painting lets you do the work and must be less costly. Bill |

Yeah, someone has to blast the parts, and that's the real expense. Once that's done, the painting's really the easy part (as long as the dewpoints are in the low 40's, that is ). I got an estimate on some motorcycle parts once, and it was in the hundreds of $US for a frame and side covers. The prep was the big expense.
Nah, I think I'll just keep on blasting and painting myself. _________________ Lane
