And, replace your fuel lines every 2 years. With good stuff, not the imitation braided hose.

not quite sure how that fire happened although I have an idea. I will be looking at it Monday and will take some better pics. these were takin by the owner with a camera phone . I lightened them up so the details were more visable. The car was on a 2 wheel dolley being towed behind a Uhaul. Its a real shame as that car was one of the nicest high mileage OG cars Ive seen. My brother and I are picking up the remains and are going to use it to restore a few cars we have.
Let this be a reminder to everyone to ALWAYS carry a fire extinguisher.

I had a '72 Squareback burn down on me like that when I was in college. It was Kasan Red, was two years old, and had less than 20K on it. Had GREAT A/C, too. We never did figure out what happened! I was driving right through the centre of campus when I heard a "Poof" and the car lost power. I looked in the side view mirror, and flames were ALREADY shooting out of the air intake louvers. It was a GREAT car- (nobody even realised or CARED that it was a "fat chick" back then!!) I had saved up and paid cash for it, and being a poor college student, only carried liability on it. Crying or Very sad I think I paid something like a "whopping" $1100 for it. you could get a LOT of car for that in those days!
A week later, I bought a '69 Square from one of the German professors on campus. He and his wife had just bought a new Duster ( Straight six, green, blackwalls, no radio, bench front seat Rolling Eyes ) and they decided they didn't need the luxury of two cars. The '69 had 80K on it, and the front fenders were rusty. The prof was afraid to drive it on the highway due to the "high miles". I offered him $150 and he said it was too much, he took $75! I went to the junkyard and they charged me $25 and allowed me to pull two nice front fenders from a wreck that matched my car perfectly. That '69 was one of the best cars I ever owned!
Those were the days! Very Happy

Another reason I say; "4 up or 4 down" when towing. Anything else is risky.

I'd bet there was a fuel leak, a bump, a spark, and KA-BOOM! Crying or Very sad

My friend told me that he saw sparks in the mirror and pulled over. The tire was flat and there were flame comming up through the wheel well.

What I think is that the tire went flat and the sparks caught the oil soaked heater box and underside of the motor on fire. Original motor. He has a new motor to go into the car too.

A bad wheel bearing, brake rubbing, a flat tire can all cause a fire.... Ive towed many a Volkswagen home and have had many instances when smoke was bellowing from the rear of the vehicle... Sad in either case!

Here are some pics of the aftermath, you can see more under my gallery.
It was absolutly disgusting to cut up and dispose of the charred remains.
