Recently purchased a 72 squareback with a pretty bad paint job. Looks OK from a distance, but upon closer inspection, there's dimpling in the paint, etc. What really bugs me though is that a lot of the door seals, fender beading, etc. has been painted over and looks very tacky. Anyone have any recommendations on how to get that paint off?? I could try to peel it with an x-acto knife, but that would probably damage the beading, and I know a lot of solvents melt rubber. I had this melting rubber experience start to happen when I was cleaning up the headliner (PO was a heavy smoker) and black stuff started to rub off onto my headliner. Bad news.

Thanks

Boy, do I know what you're talking about! The PO of my bug painted the poor thing with spray paint, and I don't think he masked ANYTHING!! Shocked

For the fender beading, just replace it. That would be the easiest. As far as window seals, you might get by if you're careful, with an xacto and some acetone, but it's iffy.

Me? I'm going to sand the whole darn car down and repaint. It really looks that bad.

Good luck.

Larry

I don't know if your supposed to use it but I just used a little bit of paint thinner on the beading(removed from the car) and it seemed to work ok for me.Maybe try a small area first to make sure.I did it figuring I was going to replace the stuff anyways, but did'nt need to in the end.
