Owned by his older cousin in the late 70's-early 80's as the second owner, it sat in a field from 1981. Years later, the then 15-year-old Ben discovered it growing weeds and sadly rusting in a field in 2002. It was a project car throughout high-school but was never finished. College intervened and it sat again in a field for five years until now. This is his first and only true car love, and the only vehicle he has ever worked on. He's out of college and back to work! Armed with only a Chilton's and a few free weekends, he's off to resurrect the 'Summer of Love' Bread Loaf. Mixed in with the VW videos are songs he records and music he jams to while working on it too! |

Historical blog about my first VW camper van - called Charlie after Steinbeck's 'Travels With' book. My girlfriend and I bought Charlie over 20 years ago, and one marriage and three kids later have a lot of happy memories and stories which I'm putting in the blog.
Charlie is a 1971 hybrid bay - in other words it has the front and tail indicators from the later split-screen style (oval rear ones, low down fronts), with the familiar bay window. I think it was the first year the bus had brake pads on the front wheels in place of the more drums. I believe all buses were manufactured that way after 71 |
