Main page
| Log
| November 30, 2001 | • Prepped car for possible sale tomorrow, took on test drive. |
|---|---|
| November 17, 2001 |
•
Adjusted front brakes, bled brake system. • Picked up socket extension, finished exhaust installation and all piping and hoses • Started car, oil cooler seal is leaking, fan is making a horrible noise like it is rubbing on something. • Left-hand carb. choke is sticking, spring for choke seems to have become dislodged. |
| November 16, 2001 | • Installed exhaust, couldn't tighten top bolts because I need a longer socket extension (broke last one) |
| November 13, 2001 |
•
Found one of the front left wheel cylinders was frozen, disassembled,
cleaned and reinstalled:![]() • Assembled NOS exhaust for installation • Attempted to bleed brakes (again!) but I ran out of fluid |
| November 12, 2001 |
•
Installed NOS master cylinder, bled brakes, front left brakes are sticking, disassembled front left for examination. • Installed new driver's door latch:
![]() • Unfortunately the interior door pull broke: ![]() • Vacuumed out door, it was full of dirt. Cleaned and lubed window track. Misc door panel pics:
![]() • Prepped exhaust and heater components for installation • Ripped previous owner's cheesy vinyl off driver's upper door pad, there is one small tear, cleaned it up for reinstall until I buy a nicer arm rest. |
| November 11, 2001 |
•
Went to a local VW show, found an NOS master cylinder, a replacement door
latch, a nice used body-to-carb. air intake seal, and a few other misc.
items. • Cleaned and lubed driver's side door latch, cleaned air intake seal |
| November 10, 2001 |
•
Checked out non-working fog lights - 1 bulb is missing, 1 is blown.
Fog light relay is also blown. • Disassembled shifter to examine bushing, bushing is missing • Removed stickers from windows and front and rear bumpers • Cleaned front and rear plastic lenses • Went and saw a 1969 Automatic Type 3 Ghia located in New River, AZ (north of Phoenix):
• Full details and photos here |
| November 7, 2001 |
•
Cleaned up some wiring under the front hood relating to the fog lights, fog lights
still don't work, I suspect a blown relay. • Removed master cylinder to check it out. Disassembled, the rubber seals are rotted and the body is pitted, time for a new one. Broke out my NOS rebuild kit and NOS master cylinder but they are both for a Squareback (20mm bore instead of 19mm). |
| November 6, 2001 |
• Finished
up some engine and ignition wiring. • Cleaned up the routing of some fuel lines and primed fuel pump and carbs. |
| November 4, 2001 |
•
Repaired starter solenoid wiring by cleaning up connections and running
some new wire. • Tested fix for oil light, it works, reinstalled fuel gauge cluster • Finished install of new rubber brake hoses • Exchanged broken tools and got the rear axle nut removed. • Could not successfully drill out broken rear brake bleeder valve, replaced wheel cylinder • Adjusted brake shoes, set e-brake handle • Bled complete brake system twice but brakes are still weak, possibly need new master cylinder... |
| November 3, 2001 |
•
Troubleshot starter system some more: Still have a poor connection from
the regulator to the fuse box, made note that a "dealer fix" on
another T34 was to run a new wire from the regulator to the fuse box. • Installed new rubber brake hoses, tried to bleed rear brakes but one bleeder valve is missing • Broke a few tools trying to remove the driver's rear axle nut • Cleaned and greased front end |
| November 2, 2001 |
•
Reset steering wheel, it was off a little. • Troubleshot starter system some more: Found poor connections at regulator underneath back seat, cleaned up connections • Ripped out wiring for aftermarket starter button • Built wiring loom for tachometer • Broke a few tools trying to loosen all the lug nuts |
| November 1, 2001 |
•
Reassembled column and turn signal stalk, spent an hour or so getting
turn signal column to self-cancel, greased all parts and adjusted steering
wheel canceling ring Troubleshot starter system: • Removed starter, cleaned internals per Type 34 club web site • Remove tranny to body ground strap, cleaned, and reinstalled • Tested ignition, still won't start with key, voltage is still 4v at starter • Tested with 6v helper solenoid, car starts now |
| October 30, 2001 |
•
Finished reassembly of ignition and column wiring, remounted column • Checked choke functionality, left-hand choke not working, repaired it with my hammer. Set chokes. |
| October 29, 2001 | • Reinstalled repaired ignition switch |
| October 28, 2001 | •
Installed rebuilt carbs. with new fuel hoses and gaskets • Installed new breather hose ![]() • Set valves for the first time, the heads look brand new! ![]() • Tore apart and repaired the factory ignition switch, someone went a little crazy with the splicing at some point in the past... ![]() • Corrected factory wiring from ignition switch to starter solenoid. It won't crank over with key and the wires get real hot, uh-oh. • Figured out there must be a break somewhere inside the wiring loom for the oil light, I'll run a new wire when I install my tachometer loom. |
| October 27, 2001 | •
Finished up the carb. rebuilds per my shop manual, had to grab a few parts
off a spare set of carbs. to fix the choke internals and linkage. • Replaced driver's side heater box (small hole near exit) with a nice piece I found for $5 at a swap meet. ![]() • Fixed heater linkage for heater boxes and rear seat controls • Spent a few hours trying to clean the interior up, I think it got a tiny bit cleaner. • Cleaned engine tin and balance pipe • Test fit tachometer I recently purchased, not Type 3 Ghia but it's old VDO and it fits nicely in the clock hole |
| October 13, 2001 | •
Spent a few hours repairing, rebuilding, and correcting the linkage and
chokes on the left carb.. • Found the fuse box cover under some stuff in my garage, cleaned it up for usage. |
| September 9, 2001 | •
Cleaned up an original German fuel pump and plastic cover that I bought in
Albuquerque in August, it came out pretty nice.
|
| September 8, 2001 | • Cut up the original rotted out exhaust so I can remove the upper heat exchangers |
| September, 2001 | • Busy with buying and selling a '62 Bus |
| August 9, 2001 | •
I was in Albuquerque, NM picking up a Bus so I took some time to go check
out a T34 at Discount, here are the details:
![]() • Full details and photos here |
| August 9, 2001 | •
Cleaned front seats and rear seat bottom with upholstery cleaner, Nice! • Examined NOS exhaust that was included with the vehicle, it appears to be a later exhaust (70s Type 3) as the tailpipe outlet is 2" and my original one is smaller (1 5/8"). It's made by Leistritz, anyone want to trade? • Messed with rear trunk lid, trying to figure out why it won't shut all the way so it is flush with the body. The lid rests about 2-3 mm above the body. My latest theory - The rear trunk lid where the lid catch bolts on is bent downward, possibly from someone forcing the lid open in the past. Opinions welcome, here's a photo (the air flow cover has been removed):
|
| August 8, 2001 | •
Removed left-hand carburetor for rebuild • Removed fuel pump, fuel lines, and original 64-65 only shut-off valve. • Removed seats and vacuumed the interior and floorboards for a couple hours, I think it needs a couple more hours of cleaning. ![]() • Removed battery, cleaned and de-scaled battery tray area, noted a couple tiny pinholes of rust. ![]() • Attempted to adjust rear trunk lid latch to make it sit flush, no luck. |
| August 7, 2001 | •
Removed original rotted exhaust • Removed right-hand carburetor for rebuild • Corrected accelerator cable to get full travel, removed extra spring on center linkage installed by previous owner |
| August 6, 2001 | •
Troubleshot oil light not working - no luck • First pass on degreasing the engine and tranny, many more to come... • Fixed passenger side fresh air drain hose, dumped a zillion gallons of water through the fresh air vents to clear out the dirt and dust • Sprayed out rear intakes to clear out rear drain holes • Adjusted, cleaned and greased rear trunk latch and key assembly |
| August 5, 2001 | •
Troubleshot low beams staying on all the time, fixed by unhooking power
(terminal 30) to fog lamp relay • Corrected installation of fuses - 8 amp vs. 16 amp - in fuse box per wiring diagram |
| August 4, 2001 | •
Purchased at 113,720 miles • Set points and timing, adjusted idle and mixture, corrected carb. linkage, synched carbs. Added tranny fluid, repaired 1 axle boot. Drove home from Chaparral, NM to Phoenix, AZ. (About 450 miles) • The selling family had a few other Type 3s, Full details and photos here |
