My '67 Squareback Everett's 1967 Squareback Log
Main page | For Sale page | Log - Current | Log - Early 2002

July 28, 2002 • The rear hatch door panel material was coming off, re-glued it.
July 26-27, 2002
• My oil light came on at idle speeds while driving home from work.  Oil temperature was only 205F so overheating is not the problem.  Noticed my intake boot had a hole in it so I replaced it with a good spare:

Boot cracked in a lot more places during removal, it was probably the original
burnedhand.jpg (42297 bytes)
Don't replace the boot when your engine is hot, you might burn your hand, oww

• After some research in my manuals and discovering that I definitely have a dealer rebuilt engine as the engine case is of the dual-relief valve style (1970-up), I removed and cleaned the oil pressure relief valves and pistons.  The front piston was stuck in the compressed position which I believe caused the low oil pressure at idle.  After a test drive on the highway at 70mph where oil temps hit 200-205F, the problem appears to be fixed.
July 21, 2002 • Spent some time degreasing and detailing the front end.
July 1, 2002 • Picked up an NOS driver's side arm rest.  Mine has a crack on the underside, which I didn't really notice for months so maybe I'll install it whenever I get around to disassembling my driver's side door to grease the window because it squeaks sometimes.
May 21, 2002 • Spent a few hours buffing and waxing the paint, removed some oxidation.  It might need some more work...
May 18, 2002 • Graphite-lubed all the key slots.
• Oiled door latches, located some new oil fill door plugs at the hardware store, almost an exact match to the originals (seen in the middle center of the photo)
door_plug.jpg (45316 bytes) door_plug2.jpg (26557 bytes)
• Sealed up a small hole in my oil dip stick rubber seal, installed a "correct" lower clamp I got from the local junkyard
oil_fill_tube.jpg (57468 bytes)
May 14-16, 2002 • Double-checked vacuum advance under various conditions to make sure it is working as expected.
May 11-12, 2002 • Adjusted clock a little more, it is still running slow.
• Prepped and installed the original distributor I located a while back.  Reset timing, idle, and synchronized carbs. to run correctly with the vacuum advance.  Located a rubber stopper at the local hardware store suitable as a seal for the timing hole plug in the fan shroud (seen in lower right)
vacuum_dizzy.jpg (78335 bytes)
• Disassembled ignition column and repaired ignition switch.

Reassembling it
May 9, 2002 • When I tried to drive the Square to work today, the ignition got stuck on "start" and began smoking and then the left side popped off.  Argggg...
May 8, 2002 • Acting on advice from Jim on the Type 3 List, I re-examined my non-functioning windshield sprayer.  It turned out it was just plugged up, probably from not being used over the years.  Cleaned out the pressure valve with a thin needle and now it works!
May 6, 2002 • Passenger rear brakes binding a little, I didn't get the brake drum perfect centered, damn new-fangled 2-piece rear drums!  Fixed brake drum, and readjusted brake shoes.  Adjusted emergency brake per workshop manual - 4 clicks = tight rear brakes.
May 4-5, 2002
• Adjusted clock again, I think it was turning the adjustment screw by itself because the little piece of tape was missing off the back side, installed little piece of tape.
• Removed speedometer to test it with my NOS cable.  It ran much smoother so I installed my NOS speedometer cable.  Speedometer needle is very smooth now.

• Replaced rear brake hoses and the passenger side rear wheel cylinder.  The wheel cylinder had the bleeder valve broken off.  I couldn't drill it out and my ez-out broke off in there too so I bought a new wheel cylinder.  Adjusted rear brakes shoes and emergency brake.

• Installed replacement aircleaner to carb. seal on right hand side, it was disfigured
• Installed new thermostat:

April 30, 2002 • Speedometer making noise, removed and disassembled speedo, looks fine so I cleaned it up and re-greased the gears.  Hooked it up partially assembled and parked it on the parcel tray so I check it out while I am driving.
April 28, 2002 • Checked out left side choke, it's not getting very hot as compared to the right side.  Replaced choke with a good used spare one I found in my garage.

April 25, 2002 • Cleaned, adjusted, and topped up steering box
• Dumped some 30wt oil down the speedo cable to see if it makes the speedo run smoother, otherwise I'll have to use my NOS one.  ;-)

handle.jpg (50327 bytes) lens.jpg (34768 bytes)
April 14, 2002 • Installed new road draft tube seal

April 6, 2002 • Cleaned up right side - front door trim, headliner, popout window trim
• Cleaned up left side - same areas, more cleaning, tried to lighten up windshield headliner trim with some cleaner and bleach, didn't work very well

breather.jpg (74959 bytes)
March 8, 2002 • Dug through a shelf of about 100 stock distributors at another local junkyard looking for the correct '67 distributor - 311 905 205G.  The very last distributor I looked at was the right one!  Pieced together a nice complete setup with parts from a 311 905 205F and stuff laying around on his shelves.
• Disassembled and cleaned up distributor with electrical cleaner
March 7, 2002 • Dug through some boxes at the junkyard, located a correct oil breather in decent condition, a replacement 1967 "black box" relay, a few extra 66-67 hubcaps, and some misc. interior trim pieces.
• Began cleaning and stripping silver paint from oil breather
March 4, 2002 • Noticed my "black box" relay is missing, it has been replacement by a series of relays, maybe by the original VW dealer?  Installation and wiring appears very professional.
