View original topic: Dune Buggy Insurance for a 19 year old

I hav called just about every insurance company I can find on the internet and nobody wants to cover a duny buggy. Any ideas? I've tried to say it will be insured under my fathers name, but that doesn't work, I wouldn't be able to drive it they say. I can build the freaking car, but I can't drive it?

Any suggestions? Thanks, Nick

Call up your current agent and ask for someone who sells collector car insurance or recreational vehicle insurance.

In Ontario there is a company with a program called Silver Wheels. You can insure any 30 y/o or older car based on appraised value for 100-200 per year. BUT they also have a category for custom cars and hot rods. I would guess a dune buggy would fit the latter. If you are 19 you will want to register it in your fathers name. Make sure you get all the information. I know with the Silver Wheels program here you can't park your car at the mall etc. You are supposed to drive it for fun or to shows, not as an errand getter / daily driver.

Can you get a ridder on your house insurance. Perhaps liability only ?

My Dad and I just insured our 75 w/ Hagerty which seems to be pretty popular w/ restoration. You pick the amount and they will insure kit cars and exotics.

However you say your 19, I thought I may have read they don't insure anyone younger than 25? (Not sure) I'm 16 and the bug's in my mom's name which gets me by..

But it says they don't insure:
Inexpensive home-built car kits that do not replicate a classic vehicle
Any vehicles used for off-road or utility-type driving

Wish you best of luck...
Sorry for being so unhelpful.

I was looking at posts in the off-road section the other day and saw a rather extensive exchange on the same question. You might want to look in there, as I recall seeing several insurance companies named. I think that it is possible that your age is a factor, but one way you might be able to deal with that is to have another older adult relative insure the car on their policy with you as a driver. They better love you, as their liability exposure will be significant. I have seen people insure buggys as Beetles, as that is what is on the model described on the title of most buggys, but I wouldn't recommend that, as it is likely that should you ever be in an accident, your claim would be denied on the basis that the car insured was not the car driven. My two cents. Hope that helps.
