Barndoors are for hardcore people only. They ride like crap, they are loud, and all parts are 5-10x as much.

You don't want one.

No, I'm serious.

A 60s Bus basically rides like a new car compared to a Barndoor.

My point, thank you sir.

Beat me, whip me, make me want more bus.

I already have more bus than I can afford. Your barndoors are safe from me and my trendiness. I just paid high retail for a Westy, my retirement money, for my retirement home. Sure, call it returning to my youth, nostalgia, whatever, but, I grew up with acvw's and drove them exclusively for twenty years.

But back to the thread:

I merely was using the example of myself to venture that demand, good taste (bad taste), money and greed are pretty universal things, not limited to Japan, the UK, nor here;

and that demand for something will increase as people become more knowledgeable; this site is very effective for educating folk.

Clue me in,

Craig

I wasn't trying to make a point, but trying to be funny (obviously a poor attempt).

My point is this. If you don't have a gut feeling (mine started with my first VW in 1965 when I was 16) that barndoors are cool because of their incredibly simple yet functional design and that they are the ancestors to all of our buses, then no one can make you think they are 'cooler' than other buses. I personally think just about all VW's up to 1967 had 'old style' which is very cool, and just because my love for buses comes from owning VW's for the past 40 years doesn't mean someone can't start appreciating them today for the first time. But don't think anything is 'cool' just because you've been told it's cool. You have to think it is cool before anyone ever tells you or it doesn't count...

most people still think that "barndoors" refers to the cargo doors and not a certain era of buses. you can tell them otherwise but they usually go blank on you.

Barndoors are the shit because they are rolling works of art and a historical relic that the average person wont appreciate. folks hear that BDs are the latest trend so they hop on the band wagon to own something that will make them cool. I know now all the oddities that make a BD a giant pain in the ass and it makes me want one. Nothing is cooler than sitting in a 50 year old bus and imagining the life it has lead, the sights it has seen ,the variety of people that have sat in the same spot, shifted the same knob, clutched the same steering wheel. the history that surrounded it is what should make it cool, not weather or not someone thinks you are for owning it.

Caught a guy taking photos of a nice 65 kombi in a shopping centre parking lot here in Japan. Asked him if it was his bus. He said no but he was going to buy one cos you can get them with automatics. I hope he was joking or ignorant :( . Most of my conversations with bus people in japan are similar, want a dvd navigation/tv system, want a radio and clock that works, maybe Ill cut in a cigarette lighter, AC would be nice, I want 100kph from my split/oval beatle.... kinda like the whole japanese cal look cumstomising thing....they dont get it. COOL they are, its not in the image they make for you. :evil:

The odd old schooler is refreshing but theyre as frustrated as I am with the whole scene.
