View original topic: Can I use this carb for dual port 1600 engine

I have a Solex 30/31 Pict carb that I would like to use on a dual port 1600 engine. I see that most people use the 34 Pict 3 for this engine. Will the carb I have work? Any negatives?

That carb should work on a dual port, but you'll need to get an adapter to mount the 30/31.
I believe this would be the one:

I haven't used that carb, but from what I hear it's alittle simpler to deal with than the 34pict carbs.

Oh, and welcome to TheSamba.

Thats what I have on my 1600 dp, maybe I'm wrong but I think I'm loosing HP with this carb.

It does work though, you need the adapter.

They do work, but make sure the main jet is at least a 125 or a 127.5

Most of the ones I've ever checked that came with the adaptor were jetted already for the dual port.

Some that were sold as a replacement for the single port ( no adaptor, direct bolt on to replace single port 30 series carbs) may have been jetted smaller for that application.

I just had that carb removed from my 79 vert. The PO put it on when he replaced the FI. The car ran, even started nicely but was a dog for power. I replaced mine with dual Kadrons and could not be happier. HUGE difference.

Yeah, it'll work. Been there, done that. Mine had the 127.5 main jet and worked like a champ. Yes, you'll probably sacrifice some power, particularly under acceleration. I did notice a bit better mileage than I did with the 34 PICT 3.

I have heard of doing this as a possible fix for those folks with the 009 distributor due to the flat spot created when running a 009 with a 34 PICT 3. Don't know the truth to that though.

I thank all of you that responded to my question.

I'm running a 30/31 on my '72 and have been for years. It works fine but does require the adapter on a stock manifold. If you buy a new manifold from CB Performance it is drilled for both the 30 Pict and the 34, so no adapter needed. In fact CB Performance is selling this setup and calling it their Mileage Master Intake System (Part # 3152). As far as the flat spot with the 009, I've still got one right off idle. I'm replacing the 009 with an 034 and going to a 34/3 just to see if it makes much of a difference. That's the thing about VW's, you can always mix and match and play. Good luck.
