So we parted out a 72/73 ish square yesterday...
as I yanked the gauges out I noticed something odd about them...
the needles were blue? Ok you late model boys....anyone else have these gauges out there?
I just posted some pictures but they are fuzzy...but you can see what i mean.
The gauges are untouched , they have not been taken apart prior to us parting out the car..
thoughts?
unfortunaly there isnt a matching clock....

I've never seen nor heard of such a thing. I'm willing to bet the owner did it.

that would suggest that these really don't exist then, correct?

Thread Hijack!

When did VW put pictures on the gauage lights, as shown in the pic?

My 68 Square has little slots instead of the pictures, but buddy has the pictures in his 67 Square.

Are the pics an early or late thing?

Late? I would guess with the IRS introduction...

Chaotic Wed Dec 15, 2004 8:50 pm

Martin,

Were these some of the "Rare" late '72, '73 Black faced gauges?? Instead of the grey ones.

I'm not Martin but I've seen the gauges -- they're grey faced, not black. And if one of the previous owners did it, they did a *damn* good job of opening 'em up and putting 'em back together. They look factory-sealed and untampered. They also did a damn good job of machine-like precision when adding the lines -- they're really *really* straight, perfect lines. So unless the PO worked at VDO ..

is there a picture of these? so we can see them or more like i can see them ?

So is the speedo all blue or just the one end? The gas guage is real easy to paint. I know I painted a nos white one red. But the speedo guage is a bit harder around the center. Possible but harder. For those that think its a VW thing, Ill be selling pink, yellow, blue and even black needle guages soon! OEM stuff.

What's the date stamp on the back of the gauges?

No-
The needle is blue at both ends w/ whit in the middle [speedo]
the gas gauge needle is blue w/ a small white break and the end tip is also blue.
So only the neelds are blue, not the face.

The reason it think it is some odd factory thing is because the car was a plain jane stocker with a blown motor and serious rust issues.

I my view nothing on this car was ever changed /modified.....but you never know....but it is odd :?

I will try to take better photos and re-post them.

TheDDB Thu Dec 16, 2004 6:24 pm

oh they are date stamped 3/71
part number...311957033a speedo

Oh ...I think all of jasons car should have pink needles...it would suite him well.
