The very first Moko Lesney Matchbox Volkswagen model was the number 37 Volkswagen Microvan (panel van or "Bulli" in Germany) introduced in 1957. The Matchbox Models of Yesteryear Y-5 1929 LeMans Bentley was also introduced in 1957 (Bentley is a Volkswagen Group brand from England). Moko Lesney Matchbox model number 25 Volkswagen 1200 Beetle Sedan was introduced in 1960 and withdrawn in 1964.

The Models of Yesteryear Y-6 1926 Type 35 Bugatti was introduced in 1961. Bugatti is another VW Group company from the Alsace, founded by the Italian Etore Bugatti. A modified Lesney Matchbox 1-75 Series number 37 was introduced to replace the original Panel Van in 1962 - this was the light green colored Volkswagen Camper without a poptop roof. A modified Models of Yesteryear Y-5 1929 4.5 Liter Bentley was also introduced in 1962, complete in beautiful British Racing Green. The light green VW Camper was withdrawn in 1967 and replaced with the Lesney Matchbox 1-75 Series number 34 Volkswagen Camper in silver / gray with an elevated roof.

The Lesney Matchbox 1-75 Series number 15 Volkswagen 1500 Sedan with "Auto Steer" came in 1969. The exterior color was white a rally racing livery. The Matchbox King Size K-24 Lamborghini Miura also came in 1969 with the "True-Guide Steering" feature, opening passenger doors and an exterior color of yellow (very rare today). Lamborghini of Italy is yet another VW Group brand purchased by VW under the leadership of Dr. Ferdinand Piech, the grandson of Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, Sr. The number 15 Volkswagen 1500 Beetle Sedan got high speed "Superfast" wheels in 1970. Superfast wheels actually last longer than regular wheels after so many years. The reason for this is that plastic changes its size over time, thus making many regular wheels (especially among the King Size models) fall off.

The Lesney Matchbox 1-75 Series number 23 Volkswagen "Bay Window" Camper also came with Superfast wheels in 1970, complete with a blue exterior color and a plastic orange "poptop" Dormobile conversion as sold new in the UK. The King Size K-24 Lamborghini Miura switched to a red exterior color in 1970 - much more common than the original yellow. This toy sold for 2 Dollars brand new in 1970 and can fetch up to $95 today if in mint condition and with a mint window box.

A new VW Beetle-based Lesney Matchbox 1-75 Series Superfast model in 1971 was the number 30 "Beach Buggy" complete with high-speed wide wheels and purple paint. Number 33 Lamborghini Miura kept its thin Superfast wheels from 1970, but the exterior paint color changed from yellow to gold metallic. The "King Size" line of larger-scale toys got many models with Superfast wheels in 1971 - including the K-24 Lamborghini Miura in red. K-29 was comprised of two models - the K-24 Miura towing the K-25 "Seaburst Power Boat and Trailer."

The 1972 Lesney Matchbox Catalogue saw the introduction of the # 13 Beach Buggy in green with a red and yellow flower decal on the hood. The VW Beetle engine in the back of the car featured eight plastic pipes (four on each side) coming out of the raised and exposed engine (chrome colored plastic). The # 20 Lamborghini Marzal (a VW group brand now owned by the Audi Division of VW) was still red in color - but this was now a flat bright red versus the earlier dark red metallic.

The 1973 Lesney Matchbox Catalogue introduced the # 11 Flying Bug - a customized Volkswagen Beetle complete with wide tires, bigger tires in the back, no bumpers, 2 plastic jet engines on the roof, a rear roof spoiler that looked like tailwings from an airplane, a German Maltese Cross Insignia on the front trunk lid and a driver with a spiked Helmet & mustache. Another new model in 1973 was the # 31 Volks-Dragon customized Volkswagen Beetle complete with wide tires, bigger tires in the back, decals looking like 2 eyes on the front trunk lid and a large powerful racing engine with an air scoop on the back part of the roof. A third new 1-75 Series model was the # 43 Dragon Wheels - A Volkswagen Beetle Funny Car which lifted up to reveal a dragster chassis.

The 1974 Lesney Matchbox Catalogue had the following Volkswagen Group vehicles in its bread-and-butter "1-75 Series": the # 11 Flying Bug in red, the # 13 Baja Buggy (now in gold), the # 20 Lamborghini Marzal (now in salmon), the # 23 Volkswagen Bay Window Camper (now in orange), the # 27 Lamborghini Countach (in orange), the # 30 Beach Buggy (in purple), the # 31 Volks-Dragon (in red), the # 43 Dragon Wheels (in green), the # 47 Beach Hopper (in blue and with the "Rolamatics" feature which made the front seats vibrate) and the # 68 Porsche 910 Racing Car. Speed King models with VW Group brand names included the # K-24 Lamborghini Miura (in red), the # K-29 Lamborghini Miura Seaburst Set with a Chrysler Speedboat on a Trailer and the # K-37 Sandcat (a Dune Buggy). Matchbox "Supersets!" gift sets with at least one VW Group model included the # G-3 "Wild Ones" Set (# 43 Dragon Wheels was one of 5 models) and the # G-6 Drag Race Set - 3 of the 6 models were VWs.......the # 13 Baja Buggy, the # 30 Beach Buggy and the # 31 Volks-Dragon.

In the 1975 Lesney Matchbox Catalogue the # 27 Lamborghini Countach had a yellow paint job. The "Streakers" range was added to the 1-75 Series. These cars had multi-colored paint jobs and decals to differentiate them from regular models. The Lamborghini Countach "Streakers" edition was orange with light green and black stripes plus the number "8" logo. The "Speed Kings" K-24 Lamborghini Miura had a new dark blue and yellow paint scheme in 1975 - the rear engine compartment lid was yellow as was the front hood lid. The hood lid had a decal of a bull's head and a sword. The K-29 Miura "Seaburst" Set had all-red car but with the same front hood lid as the K-24 (in yellow with the same decal). The "Battle Kings" of military vehicles made its debut in 1975. The K-104 King Tiger II Tank ("Königstiger" in German, which referred to the Bengal Tiger cat) featured a Porsche engine.

The 1976 Lesney Matchbox Collector's Catalogue still featured the 1-75 Series models # 11 (Flying Bug), # 13 (Baja Buggy), # 27 (Lamborghini Countach), # 30 (Beach Buggy), # 43 (Dragon Wheels) and # 47 (Beach Hopper). Numbers 11, 13, 30 and 47 all shared the same casting - a good way for Lesney to share costs. Volkswagen Group vehicles in the "Speed Kings" line still included the K-37 (Sandcat) and the "Battle Kings" line featured the K-104 King Tiger Tank designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, Sr. Lesney Matchbox was bringing out many new products in an attempt to compete with Mattel and other toymakers. These included many ranges of plastic metal kits, including the 1:32nd scale "Automobile Kits." The PK-302 Bugatti Type 59 and the PK-303 Porsche 917-10 both represent VW Group car brands.

The 1977 Lesney Matchbox Collector's Catalogue featured a brand new model - the #7 Volkswagen Golf in Green Metallic Paint with a Yellow Interior and 2 Black Plastic Surfboards on the roof. The car had a towing hook for a trailer. This was the Mark I Golf, sold as the Volkswagen Rabbit in North America and as the Volkswagen Caribe in Mexico. Other 1-75 Series models still available were the #11 Flying Bug, the #13 Baja Buggy, the #27 Lamborghini Countach, the #43 Dragon Wheels and the #47 Beach Hopper. The brand new "Two Packs" line of toys (two vehicles sold in carded plastic blister packs) featured the #TP-12 Military Ambulance and Field Car. The Ambulance was a 1-75 Series model from the past - a Type 2 T2 Bay Window Volkswagen Bus painted in Army Green with Red Cross markings. VW Group vehicles seen in the "Speed Kings" line included the K-2 Car Recovery Vehicle (with a VW "Sandcat" Dune Buggy on the rear bed), the K-37 Sandcat and the "Battle Kings" K-104 King Tiger Tank (designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, Sr.). The range of plastic "Automobile Kits" included the PK-302 Bugatti Type 59 and the PK-303 Porsche 917-10 Racing Car with the "Shell" oil company logo.

Volkswagen A.G. Group vehicles featured in the 1978 Lesney Matchbox Collector's Catalogue included the 1-75 Series models #7 Volkswagen Golf, the #43 Dragon Wheels, the #47 Beach Hopper (a "Rolamatic" model), and the Two Pack TP-12 Set (VW Ambulance and Navistar International Field Car). The Ambulance was a VW Bay Window Bus painted in US Army Green with Red Cross decals - an older casting no longer featured in the regular Matchbox range. The "Battle Kings" range included the K-104 King Tiger Tank, which was designed by Dr. Ferdinand Porsche, Sr. The Matchbox range of plastic model kits were featured in their own separate catalogue in 1978.

A brand new model in 1979 was the # 3 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupé. Other Volkswagen Group models offered in the 1979 Lesney Matchbox Collector's Catalogue were the # 7 Volkswagen Golf, the #27 Lamborghini Countach, the # 47 Beach Buggy (a "Rolamatics" model) and the # TP-12 Military Ambulance & Field Car Set (the Ambulance was a VW Type 2 Bay Window Bus). A new product in 1979 was "Matchbox Speedtrack" - 4 different sets of motorized speed track. Special 1:64 Scale cars for these sets included the # 1 Porsche 936 Racing Car (3 lbs.), the # 2 Volkswagen Scirocco (3 lbs.) and the # 5 Porsche 911 Turbo Racing Car (also 3 lbs. in weight). Another new product line in 1979 was the "Matchbox Walt Disney" range of cars with Disney characters. Within this new range of 9 cars was the # WD-3 Goofy Beetle (with Goofy as the Driver). A brand new "Matchbox Super Kings" model in 1979 was the K-70 Porsche 911 Turbo in Green with Black seats, opening passenger doors and an opening engine lid. The K-104 "Matchbox Battle Kings" King Tiger II Tank returned in 1979 as well.

The 1980 Lesney Matchbox Catalogue had a cover price of 25 cents - in the past it had been free. "1-75 Series" models from the modern Volkswagen Group included the # 3 Porsche 911 Turbo, the # 7 Mark I Volkswagen Rabbit, the # 27 Lamborghini Countach (a "Streakers" model with colorful stripes) and a brand new model for the coming year of 1981 - a Porsche 928 Coupé. The "Matchbox 900" line (formerly known as "Two Packs") still had the TP-12 Set (Volkswagen Type 2 Bay Window Military Ambulance and International Field Car) plus the brand new TP-18 Set (Volkswagen Mark I Rabbit and Sea Fire Boat with Trailer). This Rabbit came in Red, which distinguished it from the Metallic Green # 7. The Sea Fire Boat was also mostly Red, whereas the # 5 Sea Fire Boat within the "1-75 Series" had a white upper body. The "Matchbox Walt Disney" line still had the # WD-3 Goofy in his Yellow Volkswagen Beetle Convertible. The "Matchbox Super Kings" line featured the K-70 Porsche 911 Turbo in Metallic Green with Black "Turbo" stripes. The "Matchbox Battle Kings" line still had the K-104 King Tiger II Main Battle Tank in Silver with Black Camouflage markings. The "Matchbox Speed Track" line featured the # 16 Porsche 936, the # 19 Volkswagen Scirocco and the # 20 Turbo Porsche, all of which had working lights.

The 1981 Lesney Matchbox Catalogue had an initial cover price of 5 cents which was raised (with a sticker put on the cover) to 40 cents - costs were rising and Lesney was not doing well financially. VW Group vehicles included in the model lineup were the # 3 Porsche 911 Turbo, the # 7 Mark 1 VW Golf (now in Yellow), the #27 Lamborghini Countach (an Orange "Streakers" model) and the # 59 Porsche 928 Coupe (in Dark Blue). The "Matchbox 900" Series of Two or Twin Packs featured the TP-18 Set - VW Mark 1 Rabbit (in Red) with a Seafire Speedboat also in Red. The "Matchbox Walt Disney" Series still had the WD-3 Goofy in his Yellow VW Beetle Convertible. The "Matchbox Super Kings" line still offered the K-70 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe in Metallic Green and the "Matchbox Battle Kings" line still had the K-104 King Tiger II Heavy Battle Tank.

The 1982 "Matchbox" Catalogue was the final year for Lesney ownership from England - the company was bankrupt and was purchased by a Chinese investor in Macao. The new holding company would be called "Matchbox International" and all production would eventually cease in England, being moved to Macao and even to Mainland China. The 1982 Catalogue had a price of 50 cents and had a picture of large commercial trucks on the front cover. 1982 was also the final year when beautiful artwork was displayed on most boxes for the "1-75 Series" of vehicles. Volkswagen Group models offered in the product line included the # 3 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe, the # 7 "Romping Rabbit" with large monster tires and an elevated stance (a new model), the # 15 "Hi Ho Silver" modified VW Beetle Sedan (a new model), the # 23 Audi Quattro Hatchback (a new model), the # 46 "Hot Chocolate" VW Beetle Sedan Funny Car (another new model) and the # 59 Porsche 928 Coupe. Product lines outside of the traditional "1-75 Series" were much more limited than in the past due to the financial weakness of Lesney. VW Group models here included the Super Kings K-95 Audi Quattro Hatchback (a new model), the K-70 Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe and finally the "Matchbox Walt Disney" # WD-3 "Goofy" VW Beetle in Yellow.

In 1983 Lesney Products was no more - they were bankrupt, defunct and had been purchased by a Chinese businessman in Macao. The new name of the company was "Matchbox International" and the company was well-run and had a good game plan for the future. The product line would never be as high quality or attractive for collectors as it was during the good old days of English ownership by Lesney - but it was still good............much better than it is today under Mattel. The company scaled down their offerings and returned to "core business" in the short term - profits had to improve, and they would. Toy models representing the Volkswagen Group included the "1-75 Series" #3) Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe, the #7) Ruff Rabbit (with monster tires), the #23) Audi Quattro, the #46) Big Blue (a VW Beetle Funny Car), the #49 Sand Digger (an offroad VW Beetle with monster tires) and the #59) Porsche 928 Coupe. Other Matchbox product lines still surviving into 1983 were "Matchbox Convoy," "Matchbox Models of Yesteryear" and "Matchbox Super Kings." The Super Kings line included the K-70) Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe in Black, the K-98) Porsche 944 Coupe in Silver, the K-101) Racing Porsche 911 Coupe in Gold Metallic and the K-102) Race Rally Support Set (a Yellow Dodge "Team Porsche" Panel Van pulling a White Porsche 911 Coupe Racing Car on a Yellow flatbed trailer).

1984 was the first full year under the new ownership of Matchbox International in Macao. The catalogue cover showed drawings of a Pontiac Firebird, a Fire Truck, a Kremer Porsche Racing Car, a Peterbilt Tractor Trailer, a Ford Model A Woody Wagon and a Helicopter. Volkswagen Group models within the "1-75 Series" included the # 3) Porsche 911 Turbo Coupé, the # 25) Audi Quattro Fastback Sedan, the # 41) Racing Porsche, the # 49) Sand Digger 4WD Volkswagen Beetle and the # 59 ) Porsche 928 Coupé. The "Matchbox" product line was growing once again - it featured "Twinpacks" (like the "Matchbox 900" line from before), "Matchbox Convoy" (the Tractor Trailers were back) and the brand new line of "Matchbox Matchmates" (twin blister packs with vehicles from particular manufacturers such as Citroën, Ford, Jaguar, Jeep, Chevrolet and Kenworth). The new line of "Matchbox Lock-Ups" featured cars with large keys which would lock both the passenger doors and the wheels of the cars. "Matchbox Specials" were larger scale racing cars similar to the "King Size" line - the first of 11 new models here was the SP-1) Grand Prix Kremer Porsche CK5. The "Matchbox Models of Yesteryear" and "Matchbox Super Kings" lines returned as well in 1984. VW Group models here included the Y-24) 1927 Bugatti T44, the K-70) Porsche 911 Turbo Coupé, the K-86) Volkswagen Golf (with a "Shell" gasoline pump), the K-95) Audi Quattro Fastback Sedan, the K-98) Porsche 944 Coupé and the K-102) Race Support Set with a "Team Porsche" Dodge Panel Van and a White Porsche Racing Car towed on a Trailer. The "Matchbox Skybusters" line returned as well, along with 3 different Garage Playsets, 4 Gift Sets, 2 Track Sets and 4 Carry Cases. Additional brand new product lines included the "Matchbox Rough Riders 4 x 4," "Matchbox Rough Riders Tri-Ex," and themed sets based upon popular TV Shows such as "The A Team," "Knight Rider" and "The Dukes of Hazzard."

The 1985 Matchbox Catalogue featured a checkered flag on the front cover. VW Group products in the "1-75 Series" included the #3) Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe, the #25) Audi Quattro, the #41) Racing Porsche, the #49) "Sand Digger" 4WD VW Beetle, and the #59) Porsche 928 Coupe. The larger scale range of "Matchbox Specials" featured three different Kremer Porsche racing cars. VW Group products to be found in the "Matchbox Super Kings" line were the K-70) Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe, the K-86) VW Golf, the K-98) Porsche 944 Coupe, and the K-102) "Team Porsche" Race Support Set (a Dodge Van pulling a Porsche racing car on a trailer). The "Matchbox Models of Yesteryear" line included the Y-44) 1927 Bugatti T44 Coupe.

The 1986 Matchbox Catalogue had a dark blue cover background with a toy helicopter at the top carrying a sign which said "1986." The helicopter looked similar to a Fisher-Price toy for toddlers. Volkswagen Group products in the "1-75 Series" included the #3) Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe, the #11) Lamborghini Countach (a new model with a red exterior), the #25) Audi Quattro, the #49) "Dune Man" Off Road VW Beetle Sedan (the same casting from last year but with a new name and Red in color), the #56) VW Golf GTI (a new model also with a Red exterior) and the #59) Porsche 928 Coupe. The "Matchbox Specials" line of larger scale cars (similar to the Kings) featured 2 Kremer Porsche racing cars and 2 Porsche 959 racing cars. The "Matchbox Superkings" line included the K-70) Porsche 911 Turbo Coupe in Black with Red Seats, the K-86) VW Golf with a "Shell" gasoline pump, the K-95) Audi Quattro, the K-98) Porsche 944 Coupe and the K-102) Race Support Set with a Dodge Van ("Team Porsche") pulling a Porsche 959 Racing Car on a trailer. The "Matchbox Models of Yesteryear" line featured the Y-11) 1932 Bugatti Type 51 Racing Car in Blue and the Y-24) Bugatti T44 Coupe in Black with Yellow Doors and side panels.
