Early Bay Container Van ex military Command Unit   Price: 35,000 sterling
Australian Container Van models are rare enough, but when you factor in this is a Bay version built for specialist Military use (monitoring bomb blast testing) you have a very, very rare beastie indeed!

VW Australia produced its own version of a box container van from 1962, based on a Panel Van instead of a Pick Up. The box section was made from sheet steel and offered a massive 7 cubic meters load capacity as well as headroom of 1.8 metres. Access to the rear was via a large side door and twin doors at the rear. Only 123 of these were built and this is the only Bay version known in fact, until now, it was generally believed that Container Vans were all split window models. Records indicate that the last two rolled off the production line in August 1968, the end of split bus production, but the version featured was registered March1970 was it a one off special order perhaps?
It was certainly built for a very specialised use. The Australian Military had used box container vans converted for them by the Clayton factory (Melbourne, Australia), as somewhere safe for monitoring bomb blasts in the Outback during the sixties, but this Bay version has some features not seen on the Split versions with a military dickie seat in the cab, three side windows and two observation / sniper hatches plus a full under tray for bomb blast proofing. It had been sold in the mid 90s at a military auction out of Puckapunyal military base, Victoria, Australia, , where it had been listed as an ex- military mobile command unit for monitoring bomb blasts. Originally painted in VW factory Military Green, it had been repainted for the Military in Savannah Beige, as had been the earlier Split bus versions.

Fully restored in British racing green, the interior has been re-lined to retain its original look but in an aluminium finish to mirror the original steel interior but reduce weight and offers a better un-painted surface Fitted with leather seats from a Td4 Landrover discovery: the rear has full leather front facing three seat bench and two flip down rear facing single seats, up front are two cab seats plus the middle dickie seat, which was upholstered to match. The seats were installed with belts and an engineering certificate of compliance (the law in Australia) so Bertha is a legal 7 seater / 8 seater, including the original dickie seat. As part of the rebuild all the door and rubbers seals were replaced, the dash painted to match and billet ally gear stick knob, handbrake handle, heater knobs, door handles and side step fitted.

Original steel wheels were also detailed to match. The 1600 twin port AD code engine was fully rebuilt and dual solex carbs were fitted, finished off with a vintage speed stainless steel exhaust. The gearbox was also reconditioned, gear linkage renewed, and new CV joints, brake shoes and cylinders fitted. She was now as good as new again.

She is RHD. 95,000 miles on the clock, 500 since rebuild, 3 owners from new, originally Australian military. To be featured in VW Camper and Commercials, written by David Eccles edition 121 out in October.

Ideal to camperise her(double futon mattress fits between seats in the rear), or turn her into a mobile food business or DJ van.
