1989 Vanagon Syncro Westy TDI Price: 47500
This is a California registered, SMOG exempt 1989 Wolfram Gray Syncro Westfalia Camper with a 1997 diesel VW AHU 1.9 liter TDI engine. There are numerous additional upgrades, replacement parts and modifications or customizations I have completed since I purchased the van in stock form back in 2010. It has been a California vehicle it's entire life and I am the third owner; the second only owning the vehicle for less than a year after a purchase from his next door neighbor. There are 182,XXX miles on the van overall and about 20,000 miles on the second diesel engine conversion with OBDII (I have done the conversion twice). The transmission was rebuilt and regeared to the following: 1.14 3rd gear and .70 4th by AA Transaxle in Seattle, and has about 47,000 miles since the rebuild.
This is the full package Westfalia with power everything. Power windows and power locks are fully functional and the cruise control works perfectly. The power mirror gears are worn and better adjusted by hand anyway - I adjusted them once 7 years ago and have not touched them since. The A/C no longer functions but there is a compressor on the diesel engine should you decide you want to install one.
I did not use this van to go “wheeling” as many Syncro owners do. I did make improvements for clearance and off road performance so I could tackle any track that would lead to a remote camping, climbing, or skiing destination in any weather condition. It has the stock rear locker and I installed a decoupler. There is no front locker.
Selling this van breaks my heart. I am handing in my membership card to this exclusive club. I have never had so many good memories with a single vehicle and I doubt I ever will again. These vans are not just unique in design or rare in numbers, but also in the experience they provide. We want to get a truck for home projects and hauling gear. I want to see this van go to someone who will use the hell out, just as I used to, and not just add upgrades without direction or inspiration. This van loves to be road tripped and enjoys camping in remote spots. Make it go on some more adventures. She deserves it.
Due to it's west coast existence, this Vanagon does not suffer from the usual rust cancer that plagues these vehicles. That is not to say it does not have it's fair share of dings and dents. The rain and roads may be friendly to CA vehicles but the sun has taken it's toll. The paint is weathered and the clear coat worn in spots, but I opted to never repaint the van as it does not suffer from any of the usual seam rust or under carriage issues. It’s completely solid even if it may look weathered. The interior is in great shape. Everything shows it’s age, but functions well.
