1973 Thing w/2017cc   Price: Pending Shawn
This 1973 Thing was first purchased by a young school teacher in Missouri. This young lady drove it daily until around 1980, when she married and began raising a family. The Thing lived the next 10 years in the garage. The family purchased vacation property on the coast in the early 90’s, and decided to use the Thing as their vacation vehicle. The Thing stayed on the vacation home property for the next 20 years, used essentially as a golf-kart. I purchased this VW Thing from the original owner in 2009.

While it drove as smooth as a low-mileage vehicle should, the salt air certainly did take its toll on the floors and lower rockers. I drove the Thing as it was for a year before catching the restoration bug again.

I drove the Thing to Beaver Dam Customs, in Macedonia, SC for the expertise that only my best friend volksmike possesses (really! This guy is amazing!) The bumpers, wheels, doors, hood, fenders and decklid were all removed and media blasted. The bumpers and wheels were powder coated. The body and panels were worked separately. While Mike trusted me with the grunt work (sanding, sanding and more sanding), he hand-fabricated and welded in perfect lower rocker sections. Mike also completely reconstructed the windshield pivot landings by hand. A close inspection of the floors revealed the forward halves to be perfect, and the rears needing some love. So, half pans went in. After four lifetimes of primer-sand-primer-sand… Mike shot it with a beautiful Avocado from Nason. Over the following months, I replaced nearly every seal, lens, bulb…the whole car is LED. I even painted the underside with POR-15.

The interior sports duck boards with grey carpet/insulation under them for heat retention and sound deadening. The front seats were replaced with reclining Scat low-backs. The driver’s seat is heated. The rear seats are new upholstery and foam. The gauge suite includes a Speedhut tach, VDO oil temp, oil pressure, cylinder head temp, fuel level, volts and a vacuum gauge (more about that later). I’m sorry, but the skull shift knob will stay with me.

The engine is my favorite part of this car. It’s an eager 2017cc with dual Webber 40 IDFs, breathing through a NICE pair of Steve Tims Stage 1-Plus heads. The Engle 110 cam has good grunt down low, but breaths well to 5500rpm. Ignition is handled by CB’s crank fire set-up mounted under the passenger side back seat. This system uses vacuum (in this case) to adjust the ignition advance based upon engine load. The engine idles sooo smooth. Powder coated tin, 90 amp polished alternator, full breather, electric fuel pump with regulator, full flow with thermostat/cooler/filter, 3 quart sump… I’m sure you get the idea.

The transaxle is stock, and has performed flawlessly. I change the gear oil often.

The Thing currently has a hard top installed for the winter months.

The only thing this car could use is new side curtains. The current ones have plenty of life left, but are looking threadbare.

We are relocating soon, and I have too many toys. A full price offer of $17k will get serious levels of cooperation with shipping/delivery, etc… I will even include the new soft top.

Please e-mail, or text with any questions.
