Why do more than eliminate pushrods becoming permanently bent?

“Pushrods Done Right” by Dan Ruddock accomplishes this and more. Although “Pushrods Done Right” are made from 2024 T3 alloy, a higher grade of aluminum will only reduce the chance of the pushrod becoming permanently bent or the steel ends hammering loose. A higher grade of aluminum will not reduce deflection. There are only two things that will reduce deflection: 1) increase the pushrod diameter or 2) increase pushrod wall thickness. “Pushrods Done Right” does both with an aluminum pushrod diameter of 7/16” and a .120” pushrod wall thickness. My 7/16" pushrods will substantially reduce pushrod deflection when compared to 3/8" aluminum pushrods.

What is deflection?

Have you ever seen a pushrod that cleared the tube well, but after running showed rub marks? This is evidence of excessive pushrod deflection. When the pushrod deflects, the valve no longer accurately follows the cam’s profile. This results in loss of lift and duration, but only when heavily loaded. The pushrod has thus, become a poor transmission device. Also, when you bend or deflect something, there is always going to be a rebound back to straight. This will transfer unwanted motion or surges back into the valve train. The only movement you want should come from the cam. The rebound motion could possibly send the springs into harmonics, which contribute to loss of valve control and a shorter spring life. Now one must understand, to completely eliminate "ALL" deflection, the pushrod would have to be so big that it would never fit a VW engine. The goal is to keep the problem within reasonable limits.

Why add weight to get strength?

“Pushrods Done Right” are 67 grams @ 11.200" maximum length with steel ends. They will get lighter as most builders will run them shorter. “Pushrods Done Right” can be shortened up to .590” and can be ordered even shorter if your application calls for it. They are comparable in weight to chromoly but without the noise of chromoly. Dual taper pushrods reduce weight and address tube clearance, but they are also costlier and add no extra strength for a given tube size. Yes, “Pushrods Done Right” have a little more weight compared to other aluminum pushrods but you won't find a more rigid or durable aluminum pushrod.

Why a bigger and stronger aluminum pushrod?

With more choices for big mouth pushrod tubes available today (especially since big mouth tubes can be as inexpensive as $20), a bigger aluminum pushrod diameter and a thicker pushrod wall makes a whole lot of sense. “Pushrods Done Right” must be used with and are designed to take advantage of the benefits that come with big mouth pushrod tubes.

What applications will “Pushrods Done Right” work well with?

They are intended for ratio rockers, but work well with 1.0 or 1.1 stock rockers. I don’t recommend using stock rockers for more than .430" lift for daily driver street use, regardless of what pushrods you use. “Pushrods Done Right” will have tube clearance issues (even with the big mouth tubes) with stock style 1.25 rockers.
