1973 Thing - Rust-Free   Price: 4950
I must reluctantly part with my 1973 Thing survivor with clean title. Iíve started the job but unfortunately, I will not be able to complete the restoration any time soon and I canít bear to see it sitting. This will be an easy project to finish as the body is rust-free and in original paint, so there are no bodywork atrocities hidden under gallons of Bondo. I bought the car from the grandson of the original owner, who passed away years ago. It car has 47,xxx original miles and has spent most of its life in the gentle climate of Southern California. After the death of the original owner, the Thing was moved to Arkansas where it sat for several years until I acquired it and had it transported to my home in Florida. Before beginning the restoration, I started and ran the engine for about 30 minutes. It ran great with no smoke and had good oil pressure. The engine will not need to be rebuilt but the carburetor should be gone through and the normal re-commissioning work should be done. It has none of the typical hidden rust problems that plague these cars. As with most Things, the floor pans were rusty, so rather than doing a half-assed patch job, I pulled the body to do the job properly. All the body bolts threaded out perfectly so no drilling of broken bolts will be required. The driver side pan half has been installed and the passenger side pan will go to the new owner. The new pans are high quality, heavy gauge steel from The Thing Shop and were not inexpensive. The tunnel and tunnel lips are perfect and will not need any repair. The car will come with all parts plus an array of extra stuff I bought, including a clean, rust-free convertible top frame and correct low-back seat frames. Some leaves and dirt had collected in the front outer cowl and rusted the hood seal lip. I could have repaired the lip, but I managed to locate an NOS outer cowl panel from VW Heritage and had it shipped from England (another pricey and rare item). Iíve removed the cowl skin and the inner cowl is perfect. It has been sanded and primed and is ready for the new panel. I looked at many Things but all were either badly rusted, hacked up or both. I searched for over a year for a solid, original paint candidate and finally found this one. The body can be put back on the chassis for transportation. I have many more pictures if interested. Here's a link to a video of the engine running https://youtu.be/7miQZ0YL2Bs . Hard top not included.
